It's the smallest country to reach the World Cup final since Uruguay in 1950, and now, Croatia faces its biggest challenge, will the team finally be able to win the final against France and lift the World Cup trophy for the first time ever.

"I heard people saying I had a hard season but I don't agree with that", the 29-year-old told BeIN SPORTS.

"But I like to challenge these strikers and to show to everyone that I'm one of the best defenders".

Lovren claimed he was one of the best defenders on the planet on Wednesday after Croatia's win over England in the semifinals of the World Cup.

"This is something historical for us", said Lovren.

He continued: "This is something we'll never forget".

"We will never forget this". We have come back after 20 years to the semis and we deserve it.

Lovren says he remembers his mum took him and they went to the basement and can't remember how long they sat there. And it Is a special history when you look back and see that three times in the knock out stages we have played 120 minutes and yet we still had fresher legs than that England team.

"[In Croatia] we went through a lot of s***, war, all these things and even now the situation is not the best".

'It was tough first-half. "After everything that's been said before the game, we showed our character and that we deserve to be in the final".

"They had also good chances, but second half we did it much, much better".

But after the break, Croatia took control, equalised through Ivan Perisic and then won the game with Mario Mandzukic's extra-time strike.

One player Lovren insists should garner the respect of football fans worldwide is compatriot and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, urging FIFA to recognise his achievements and award him the Ballon d'Or.
