Donald Trump heaps praise on PM hours after criticising her leadership

  • A helium-filled Trump blimp is expected to be deployed during the president's visit

In an antagonistic interview with The Sun, the United States president lashed out at Sadiq Khan, accusing him of doing a "terrible" job, claimed Boris Johnson would make a great Prime Minister and made it clear he was very aware of the giant inflatable Trump baby due to fly above Parliament today - and would be avoiding London.

In a sometimes rambling performance following talks with May at her country retreat of Chequers, the U.S. president dismissed comments made in an interview with the Sun that was published on Thursday night. I am just saying I think he would be a great prime minister.

In that interview, Trump said that May's new, softer approach to Brexit-which would leave Britain sticking to a "common rulebook" with Brussels on goods-would kill off the chances of a highly sought USA -U.K. trade deal. "Of course that's coming from NBC, which is possibly worse than CNN", he said, adding that her question was "dishonest reporting". "When the president speaks about immigration, you will repeatedly hear him put it in the sense of a threat, a security threat specifically, and that's also how he framed it when he was talking about it in Europe". "The U.S. has always stood by our side as a beacon for tolerance, openness and respect", he said in a statement on Thursday.

There are street protests of Trump's first visit to Britain since taking office almost 18 months ago. I am assuming that his mum told him that when you go to someone's house you do not insult the host.

"Today we're talking trade, we're talking military, we just moved some incredible anti terrorism things. The relationship is very, very strong", Trump told reporters.

"The relationship between our two nations is indispensable to the cause of justice and peace", Trump said.

The poll comes as Air Force One, the plane carrying the president and his staff, touched down in the United Kingdom on July 12.

Speaking at Chequers, Mr Trump told Mrs May "whatever you do is OK with me" on Brexit, but urged her to "make sure we can trade together".

"Once we have our agreement with the European Union in place, I'm confident that there will be the latitude and the ability to do a significant trade deal with the United States".

She said she and Trump came up with an "ambitious deal that works for both countries", that would build on the U.K.'s independent trade policy.

Alan Duncan, Foreign Office minister, said he was still confident of a US-UK trade deal and called Donald Trump a "great character".

He added: "I would have done it much differently. One of the reasons I got elected was because of immigration, I felt that Brexit had the upper hand, and most people didn't agree with me".

But Trump tried to make it up to May on Friday, repeating over and over that she was a "tough negotiator", - a high form of praise from the author of "The Art of the Deal".

On Friday he rephrased his account, saying that he had given "a suggestion" to May over Brexit, not advice.

Downing Street and the White House had attempted some damage control overnight and on Friday morning.

He said he had gotten to know her a lot better in the last few days and reckoned she was a "tough negotiator and a very smart and determined person" who would do very well.

Trump claims the report was "fake news" but doesn't specifically deny any of the published comments.

"I think he's got what it takes".

Asked if the ex-minister could be in No. 10 one day, he replied: "Well I am not pitting one against the other".

Just hours before arriving in London, the U.S. president questioned progress in Brexit talks and Britain's new plan to remain close to the European Union on regulatory standards for goods.
