Djokovic advances to Wimbledon quarterfinals

  • Novak Djokovic equals Jimmy Connors and Andy Murray by reaching Wimbledon quarter-finals

Three times champion Novak Djokovic roared back after dropping the second set to beat Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-2 and reach his eighth Wimbledon semi-final.

Now ranked only 21st in the world, with his career stalling since his 12th Grand Slam title at the 2016 French Open, last year's Wimbledon saw him retire in the quarter-finals with a season-ending elbow injury. "Luckily for me it didn't happen", Djokovic said after he romped to a 6-4 6-2 6-2 win to reach the last eight for a 10th time. "I need to find that something".

The 20-time Grand Slam victor lost the set 6-4 as Anderson's relentless, powerful serve sent the match into a fifth and deciding set.

After racing through the first set, Djokovic was handed his first code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct after bouncing his racquet into the grass in frustration at squandering three break points in the third game of the second set.

Djokovic incurred a warning for throwing his racket and then later complained of "double standards" when Nishikori was not punished for doing the same. A final break clinched with a forehand victor, and the match was lost. "I'm enjoying my Wimbledon journey". "It's always big challenge", said Nishikori. "I don't like that", he said. "I really do. I think with the performances I've had, I deserve to be in the semifinals".

Novak Djokovic looked back to his best on Wednesday after clinching a spot in yet another Wimbledon semi-final.

The Spaniard reached his 28th Grand Slam semi-final and his first at Wimbledon since 2011. "I feel like I'm peaking at the right moment".

"I want to use today's result as a spring from which to aim for a final place".

A year ago, officials refused to move Djokovic's match with Adrian Mannarino on to Centre even though the court sat empty, while on Monday they opted to give priority to a mixed doubles encounter once Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal had all swiftly booked their quarter-final berths.

The former world number one lost his serve in the seventh game, too, but Khachanov simply could not take advantage and Djokovic made no mistake by claiming his first set point when it arrived.

"Down two sets to love I tried my best to keep fighting".

Roger Federer walks to his chair after losing to Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon on July 11. "I just kept telling myself this will be my day". He [Ramos] said he didn't see it. I know, as everything in life, we are evolving.

It will be Djokovic's first semifinal Wimbledon appearance since 2015.
