Convicted Sharifs return to face jail term

  • Nawaz Sharif’s brother Shahbaz says it is painful to see PM Modi attending G20 summit

"Goodbyes are hard, even for the grownups", Maryam had tweeted with a picture of her children.

"My children have been wrongly convicted; I won't let them go to jail; however, if they are sent to prison, I will go with them", she said.

Sharif said that "draconian crackdown" on his supporters by the Punjab government shows that the authorities are scared of his appeal and are desperate to stop tens of thousands of people from reaching Lahore airport to welcome him and his daughter.

From Lahore, they are expected to be taken to Islamabad by helicopter and moved to Adiala jail.

Underscoring the tensions gripping Pakistan in the run-up to the poll, a suicide bomber had killed more than 100 people at an election rally a few hours earlier, in the deadliest such attack in the country in more than three years. According to sources, the Cabinet Division has allocated two helicopters - reserved for the prime minister - to the NAB to shift Sharif and his daughter to jail from the airport. "The country is at a critical juncture right now", said Nawaz Sharif.

On July 6, Nawaz was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of eight million pounds was slapped on him in the Avenfield Reference case, while Maryam was sentenced to seven years of jail and fined two million pounds, by the Accountability Court.

He further said it is very painful for him to see Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending G20 summit and all we can do is watch.

A spokesman for Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party confirmed they were arrested soon afterwards.

Sharif, who was in London with his wife and children when the verdict was announced, said he is returning to Pakistan from London to fulfil his pledge to "honour the vote". Police have virtually put Lahore on lockdown as scores of Sharif's supporters clashed with police in the evening. He was arrested by the NAB after he appeared at a PML-N rally in Rawalpindi.

Sharif, has been one of the country's leading politicians for most of the past 30 years.

She along with her father Nawaz Sharif will be arrested by NAB at UAE's Abu Dhabi Airport later this morning.

Sharif has also said the military's intelligence wing, the Inter-Services Intelligence agency, is intimidating his party's candidates to switch loyalties, or to run as independents, ahead of the July 25 poll. His brother Shehbaz became PML-N's president, but Sharif remains the power behind the throne.
