  • Less Than Half of The Separated Immigrant Toddlers Will be Reunited By Tomorrow's Deadline

Sabraw ordered the reunifications in response to a class-action lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of some 2,000 parents.

Last month, Sabraw set Tuesday as the deadline for the Trump administration to reunite children under 5 with their families.

The report noted that only four of the 102 children under the age of 5 who were supposed to be reunited on Tuesday were successfully reunited with their families ahead of the deadline, with dozens more expected to be returned to their parents by the end of Tuesday.

Since the government first came under pressure to ease its policy on separations weeks ago, it has shifted its estimates of the number of children it would reunite.

Immigrant parents who reveled after joyful reunions with their young children spoke Wednesday of the traumatic impact of being separated from their sons and daughters for months after they were taken from them at the USA border.

Officials have said they have taken steps including the testing of DNA to prove family relationships, and reviewing whether the parents would be suitable caregivers.

"Our work to reunite the second group of families ... continues", added Albence, saying the process will be completed "as safely and as efficiently as we did with the first group".

Later in the statement, the administration explained away the parents who remained separated from their 46 children: 12 have already been deported "and are being contacted".

Meekins said seven adults were not the parents of the children they brought into the United States, one had a falsified birth certificate, and one was alleged to have abused the child, though it is unclear if charges have been brought.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, 57 children out of 103 in HHS custody were reunified with their parents. A lawyer for the USA said that of the 102 children under five, the US has determined 54 will be rejoined with their families. She said the government said one would be reunited sometime Wednesday.

If the government failed to reunite all the children five with their parents by Thursday, Sabraw has asked the ACLU to suggest penalties he could levy against the government.

The government pays for DNA and screening fees, officials said.

Other areas of disagreement include whether fingerprint checks should be run on other adult members of the household and parent participation a legal orientation program should be required before release.

"We have an adult who was charged with smuggling", he said, "an adult convicted of child cruelty and narcotics, an adult with domestic violence charges, an adult wanted for murder in their home country. But make no mistake about it: the government missed the deadline even for these 57 children", attorney Lee Gelernt said.

1 child can not be reunified at this time because the parent's location has been unknown for more than a year. Nine adults are in federal custody for other offenses, two are in state jails for other offenses and the location of one adult believed to be the parent of a separated child has been unknown for more than a year.

In the meantime, many of these children have had to face their immigration proceedings without their parents in court.

The Trump administration said Thursday all eligible small children separated from their families as a result of its zero-tolerance immigration policy have been reunited with their parents. "They are just using children!" he said.

After the executive order was issued, the administration said it would seek to detain the families together indefinitely, much like a similar attempt by the Barack Obama administration, but that has so far been blocked by the courts. Sabraw also gave the immigration authorities 14 days to reunite children under the age of 5 with their parents.
