Trump nominates conservative judge Brett Kavanaugh for Supreme Court

12 July, 2018, 19:57 | Author: Priscilla Morrison
  • President Donald Trump speaks in the East Room of the White House in Washington to announce Judge Neil Gorsuch standing with his wife Louise as his nominee for the Supreme Court. A family separation crisis of

Ashley Estes and Brett Kavanaugh met while they were both serving on Bush's staff. Ashley Estes Kavanaugh is now the town manager of a village in Maryland.

But that doesn't mean Hardiman is out of the mix.

The official said Mr Trump decided on Mr Kavanaugh, a front-runner throughout the search process, because of his large body of jurisprudence cited by other courts, describing him as a judge that other judges read. He was on Republican George W. Bush's team in the contentious Florida recount fight in the 2000 presidential election, then served as a senior official in Bush's White House.

A photo of Kavanaugh appearing chummy with former Bush political strategist Karl Rove, who has been critical of Trump, has been tweeted around by Trump supporters. He later served as assistant to the president and White House staff secretary. It's the same court that produced three current high court justices. Trump's tax cuts will fade with time, regulations erased by this president can be rewritten by the next one, spats with foreign leaders can be patched up, but judicial appointments - and their court rulings - endure for decades.

Kennedy's retirement left a hole for Trump to fill smack in the middle of the deeply divided court, where all nine justices tend to vote the way the presidents who nominated them expected.

Most Republicans are expected to support Kavanaugh, while most Democrats will nearly certainly vote against him.

Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME are considered swing votes on the Republican side of the aisle - two members who voted against GOP-led efforts to repeal Obamacare previous year - and have expressed concerns about any action to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark abortion ruling. John McCain, R-Ariz, is absent getting cancer treatment, so Republicans now have just a 50-49 vote hold. That is something that the Supreme Court has to guard against.

It can seem as if Kavanaugh has been getting ready for this moment for some time. He also helped author the Starr Report, famous for detailing President Bill Clinton's sexual scandal. Kavanaugh worked specifically on the suicide investigation of Vince Foster. He is "generally considered to have a near-perfect record, but he has piles of history with the government going back to Ken Starr and GWB, all those docs are no doubt under review". They see him as too pragmatic and have painted him as the kind of nominee who could betray conservatives. John Kyl should act as the "Sherpa", the person responsible for guiding the nominee around Capitol Hill as they begin the work of meeting with senators individually.

The senator had stumped publicly for her and called her an outstanding judge. Feinstein faced backlash and criticism, especially from Catholic leaders who accused her of being anti-Catholic.

With fanfare befitting the nation's pre-eminent showman, President Donald Trump on Monday poured accelerant on his campaign to shift Washington's balance of power toward conservatives and remake the federal judiciary for generations to come.

A more conservative majority could be more willing to uphold state restrictions on abortion, if not overturn the 45-year-old landmark Roe v Wade decision that established a woman's constitutional right.

One of the first cases the court is scheduled to hear this fall is an age discrimination suit from Arizona that was filed by firefighters against the Mount Lemmon Fire District.

That could imperil support from Republican moderates in the Senate, especially Alaska's Lisa Murkowski and Maine's Susan Collins. John McCain back in Arizona fighting cancer, McConnell can not afford to lose a single Republican vote without convincing Democrats to cross the aisle and back a candidate who is largely seen as a conservative nominee.

As Trump approached the podium, Hannity said The Associated Press had reported that Kavanaugh was the choice. And often when two factions war with each other over a judicial pick, a different candidate becomes more attractive.

Kavanaugh, seeking to get ahead of the coming confirmation fight in the Senate, made a point of giving shout-outs in his speech to the female influences in his life, mentioning his wife, mother, daughters and female law clerks. He also has a deeper judicial record than she does.
