Trump Admin Favored Corporations In Opposing Breastfeeding Resolution

  • Breastfeeding basics for mom and baby

Breastfed babies usually get sick less often, because breast milk contains antibodies that can protect infants from bacterial and viral infections.

The resolution, sponsored by the Ecuador, encouraged governments to oppose marketing that claims baby formula is better for babies than breastfeeding. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusively breastfeeding babies until they are six months old, and continuing partial breastfeeding for the first year.

The original WHO resolution "does not in any way 'deny access to infant formula, ' " said Aunchalee Palmquist, an assistant professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health and the Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The US delegation worked hard, but largely unsuccessfully, to water down a resolution recognizing the importance of breastfeeding for infants and working against misleading attempts to sell substitutes for a mother's milk, the Times reported, citing more than a dozen participants from various countries, many of whom requested anonymity for fear of US retaliation. Mothers should be encouraged and supported to breastfeed; however - if breast milk is not available or not chosen - parents should have access to information from trusted sources.

The Times notes a 2016 series in the Lancet in which researchers estimated that universal breastfeeding could spare the lives of 823,000 children each year and save $302 billion in economic losses. "Many women need this option because of malnutrition and poverty", Trump wrote.

The Trump Administration is under fire for trying to bully other nations into voting against an worldwide resolution in favor of breastfeeding over formula milk for infants.

"We were talking to all the other countries and could see that they were backing off and very frightened that they would be sort-of got at by the United States government if they went forward", she said, noting that a lot of countries -particularly poorer ones- take money from the U.S. in some form of aid so it is "a big deal for them to actually lose that money".

These reports shocked physicians and public health advocates in the United States and around the world and stood in stark contrast to decades of infant and maternal research and guidelines. "PETA's billboard pays tribute to breastfeeding and urges parents to stay away from formulas made with the milk of mother cows pining for their babies, who were denied the nourishment meant for them".

According to a report by The New York Times however, the United States delegation attempted to upend deliberations in an effort to protect the financial interests of baby formula manufacturers. Milk from a mother to a child is also nutritionally specific. Utah reported the highest breastfeeding rate - 94 percent - while just over half of MS mothers said they had tried to breastfeed their children.

Aware of these problems, the World Health Organization has tried to limit the use of formula, especially in poorer countries around the globe.

Of course, if ratified, the industry would shrink like an unmilked breast (fun fact: the free formula sample bag given in many hospitals includes an ice-pack to help stop milk flow in new mothers).

Patti Rundall, the policy director of the British advocacy group Baby Milk Action, said she was "appalled and also saddened" by the US government's alleged threats.

As we've seen in the debates over abortion or plastic surgery or pregnancy nutrition, everyone has an opinion about what women should and should not do with their bodies-even if they don't inhabit a female body themselves.
