US Secretary of State says he's confident North Korea will disarm

  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrives for a meeting with Kim Yong Chol a North Korean senior ruling party official and former intelligence chief for a second day of talks at the Park Hwa Guest House in Pyongyang

Do you think China will deliberately try to make dealing with North Korea hard?

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging, and we know critics will try to minimize the work that we have achieved", he said.

For the U.S.to press CVID only "disrupts" bilateral talks, stokes "distrust" and increases the danger of war, the North continued, adding that a "step-by-step approach" and following the "principle of simultaneous actions" was needed to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

Mr Pompeo reiterated in Tokyo on Sunday that sanctions on North Korea will remain in place until Pyongyang achieves "final" denuclearisation.

Trump famously declared "there is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea" after his June 12 summit with the dictator, though the President likely knows the regime still remains a threat.

Soon after Pompeo departed from North Korea on Saturday, senior officials in Pyongyang blasted his perhaps overly optimistic views about the talks, in a statement released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

It's also a reminder of difficulties in negotiating with the North, which has a track record of dragging its feet in nuclear talks seen as part of a strategy to buy time for the development of weapons.

Kim made a broad commitment in Singapore to "work toward denuclearization" but did not give details on how or when he would dismantle North Korea's nuclear programme. Seoul maintains they defected to South Korea of their own free will.

The comment on Twitter Monday was Trump's first public response after North Korea's accusation this weekend that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made "gangsterlike" demands that it abandon its nuclear program during his recent visit to Pyongyang.

Quintana was in South Korea on a week-long mission to meet with government officials, activists, North Korean defectors as well as some of the restaurant workers to gather information for his regular report to the UN General Assembly in October. The apparent deterioration in talks came as no surprise to many analysts who say any deal will take months, if not years, to complete.

Thank you for your time.

Pompeo said the North Korea diplomats "did not push back" in his discussions with them in Pyongyang. "It is not for the United Nations, not for the Republic of Korea or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to have a say in this regard".

"If they are able to do this, they will be remembered, and Chairman Kim will be remembered, as a hero of the Korean people".

A letter from Kim to Trump was also delivered to Pompeo through Kim Yong-chol, a top North Korean party official.

On Sunday, Iowa GOP Senator Joni Ernst said the US should restart its military exercises with South Korea if talks don't continue.

Trump did not give any sense of when he might give the CD to Kim. It recoiled at what it described as a "unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization". But after months of rhetoric from Trump about US allies not pulling their weight, it'd be far harder to get them on board for such a move. "We had productive, good-faith negotiations".
