Trump Picks Kavanaugh For Supreme Court

  • Local expert speaks about Trump's Supreme Court pick

Before boarding Air Force One en route to Washington, Trump said he was considering four people and that of those under consideration, "you can't go wrong". Jon Kyl of Arizona to be the "sherpa" to steer President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee through the Senate confirmation process, spokesman Raj Shah announced.

Trump has called the Supreme Court pick "the most important decision a US president can make", and advocates say that nominating a conservative justice to replace Kennedy could overturn long-standing decisions such as Roe v. Wade.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions. It'll likely be a name on the list that President Trump compiled while he was campaigning for the presidency, which has already been vetted by conservative groups.

Hatch said he is prepared for his 15th Supreme Court confirmation fight since becoming a senator. President Barack Obama announced the selection of Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor from the White House during the day. She said the Senate "should confirm his nomination without delay". Republicans meanwhile are lobbying the White House on behalf of their preferred candidate.

At a White House ceremony announcing the pick, Trump described Kavanaugh as a man of "impeccable credentials" and a "true thought leader among his peers". A more conservative majority could be more willing to uphold state restrictions on abortion, if not overturn the 45-year-old landmark Roe v. Wade decision that established a woman's constitutional right. At The National Law Journal, Leon Friedman contends that even if the nominee is confirmed, "that doesn't mean progressives are powerless against such rollbacks" to abortion rights, LGBT rights and affirmative action.

Trump is hoping to replicate his successful nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch previous year. He expressed renewed interest in Hardiman - the runner-up when Trump nominated Gorsuch, said two people with knowledge of his thinking who were not authorized to speak publicly. But the situation appeared to remain fluid.

The nominee has amassed a solidly conservative judicial record since 2006 on the influential U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the same court where three current justices including Chief Justice John Roberts previously served.

Speaking of the president's shortlist, which The Hill reported includes Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman, Graham suggested that any conservative Republican would be happy with the options-touting Hardiman in particular as a good choice.

But his supporters note his experience and a wide range of legal opinions.

They include Judge Raymond Kethledge, 51, who sits on the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals, who would puncture the Ivy League aura that cloaks the Supreme Court since he studied law at the University of MI and not Harvard or Yale.

Barrett has spent 15 years of her life as a law professor at Notre Dame.

Leonard Leo, who is on leave from the Federalist Society and has been advising Trump over the court nomination, said he assumes Kavanaugh, Barrett, Hardiman and Kethledge "are the four" who are getting the most focus. He co-authored a book with Army veteran Mike Erwin of The Positivity Project published past year called "Lead Yourself First: Inspiring Leadership Through Solitude".

He tweeted: "Trump SCOTUS team has looked at Kavanaugh's past comments on indicting a sitting president, we've confirmed". "This is a really big decision for him".

"Well, it's still - let's say it's the four people".

Kavanaugh's time in Bush administrations, for example, could count against him with a President who is suspicious of the political establishment. "For these and other reasons, we are calling on citizens to urge their senators to firmly oppose the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh as a Justice on the United States Supreme Court". The Heritage Foundation is the nation's largest conservative think tank and has provided thousands of policy recommendations and personnel suggestions to multiple presidents and to Congress since 1975.
