That meant penalties would decide the match, with Croatia running out winners and setting up a date with England at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Fans spilling out of bars chanted "Russia" in the street and danced as music blared.

A relatively stale first thirty minutes gave way to an opener from Russian Federation, a stunning strike from the blue, scored by Cheryshev. Was quite a tense moment, but the goal was not.

The home team punished them when Cheryshev came in from the left and, after a one-two with Artem Dzyuba, skipped away from Modric to curl an exquisite 31st-minute effort beyond Subasic, who remained rooted to the spot as the ball sailed in.

In the first minutes of the match, goalkeeper Akinfeev showed a great attitude.

The crowd erupted, but Croatia were undeterred and equalised just eight minutes later. Croatia skipper Modric then put his side in the lead when Akinfeev pushed the ball onto the post only for it to creep into the net. However, Croatia played with much confidence and initiative. Apparently, Russia is unfairly underestimated twice. But Fernandes followed with Russia's second miss of the shootout.

The 120 minutes would end 2-2, with the dreaded penalty shoot-out awaiting the two sides.

Many fans gave him a standing ovation when he was taken off in the second half.

Cheryshev, who scored three times in the group-stage wins over Saudi Arabia and Egypt, was back in the line-up here after beginning on the bench against Spain last weekend. In the 23rd minute Erokhin made a unsafe shot than could push his team ahead, but the goal was not due to hitting the post.

Croatia has eliminated the host of the World Cup.

But the omens were good for Russian Federation, too. "We were lucky. I was concentrating throughout the match, but after that penalty it came bursting out of me". After a decent start, Croatia began only to keep the ball in the middle while trying to slow down the game. Stanislav Cherchesov, the Russian tactician, never stopped believing.

However, the 90 minutes would produce no more goals, with the game forced into extra-time.

Croatia have been playing nice football at the World Cup, with their high press and the likes of Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic in their ranks. Just before the hour mark Akinfeev was again called into action but this time the man who could do no wrong for Russian Federation hesitated when collecting a cross. Unlike the match against Spain, Russia beat into the right gate. The player is hit directly in the hand of the goalkeeper. It could be either defensive or attacking, depending on the pressure applied by Croatia. The expense of a penalty kick 1:0.

For all of Russia's hard running, it was unable to prevent the equalizer just eight minutes later.Mario Mandzukic's powerful run down the left was followed by a deft chip into the box, which the onrushing Kramaric diverted past Igor Akinfeev.

Russia's indecisiveness in defence led to them conceding another soft goal on the 100th minute mark. The result of Croatia won with 4:3 on penalties.
