The speed eater is perhaps best known for downing 72 Nathan's Famous hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes last year (a competition record) at the annual International Hot Dog-Eating Contest in Coney Island in NY - marking his 10th win in the last 11 years.

On the Fourth of July, while you were relaxing and eating hot dogs, there was someone working very hard and eating hot dogs-74, to be precise.

For 102 years, Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs have held their annual Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4 in Coney Island. In 2017, he set a world record by eating 72 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.

In fact, it wasn't all plain sailing as when the judges were adding up Joey's hot dog numbers, they hadn't realised he was eating two at a time at the beginning so only gave him a score of 64.

Among the ladies, Miki Sudo walked away with the trophy after eating 37 hot dogs in 10 minutes. It is a tradition to grill hot dogs on the fourth of July, and this was later turned into a spectator sport, which is considered a big part of the Independence Day celebrations. "As soon as I can start eating, I try to eat vegetables, fiber", Chestnut told Kieran Darcy of ESPN.

Joey Chestnut, the 10-time Nathan champ was the crowd favourite this year too with a tough fight from Matt Stonie.

The prize money for the person who eats the most hot dogs is $20,000 is paid to the top men and another $20,000 is paid to the most accomplished women. Another name to keep an eye on is 24-year-old Carmen Cincotti, who gobbled down 60 hot dogs last year to finish second.

Seventy-four hot dogs represent 54,000 milligrams of sodium, which is approximately 2368 percent of the recommended daily allowance.

It also marked the third consecutive win for Chestnut who ate a personal record of 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Scoring at the event, which takes place on New York's Coney Island boardwalk every Fourth of July, has financial implications.
