  • Armed, barricaded suspect may be former NBA, UCLA basketball star: report

According to KABC Los Angeles, Honeycutt's mother contacted authorities on Friday night, stating that her son was "acting erratically". Honeycutt then barricaded himself inside a residence for hours, according to police.

A crisis negotiation team was brought in as roughly 30 residents were evacuated from the surrounding area.

According to LAPD.it doesn't appear as if Honeycutt was struck by any gunfire in the shootout, but "appears to have sustained injures consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound".

After a prolonged standoff, SWAT teams entered the house early on Saturday morning and found the suspect "unresponsive".

The 27-year-old from Sylmar, California, played for the UCLA Bruins from 2009 to 2011, when he was drafted in the second round by the Sacramento Kings. He was taken by the Kings 35th overall and played two seasons in Sacramento before being traded to the Rockets in February 2013. A month later, Honeycutt was waived.

Basketball player Tyler Honeycutt has died after a shootout with U.S. police, local media report. Honeycutt had been playing overseas since 2013, most recently in Russian Federation with BC Khimki.
