  • Police: Newspaper gunman planned deadly attack carefully

The group staged a protest against the Trump administration's immigration policies at the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday, hanging an "Abolish ICE" banner at the base of the statue.

The woman is detained by police after a four-hour standoff.

Okoumou, of Staten Island, "staged a risky stunt that alarmed the public and endangered her own life and the lives of the (New York Police Department) officers who responded to the scene", U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a statement.

But Rise and Resist NYC, which organized the protest, said her protest on the statue was not part of the group's move.

Social justice activist/Journalist Shaun King wrote online that he was "deeply moved" by Okoumou's bravery to protest "the egregious human rights abuses of this nation". He said he didn't know her name. "We've had two unusual events occur back-to-back", National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis told Eyewitness News.

Statue Cruises, which provides trips to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, turned away as many as 3,000 people because of the statue climber, company representative Rafael Abreu said.

Police were trying to coax the woman down.

Todd Bice, Davidson's attorney, said in response to the ruling: "As the court noted, Mr. Davidson's artistic creation of the Las Vegas Lady Liberty is highly unique and attractive which is what prompted the US Postal Service to select a photo of his work for the second ever Forever Stamp, over hundreds of other images".

Earlier in the day, at least six people who hung a banner emblazoned with a message about abolishing the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency from the statue's pedestal were arrested.

ICE officers arrest and deport immigrants who are in the United States illegally, among other duties. At one point, she removed her sneakers and tried to climb higher on the statue but wasn't able to get any higher.

They too were facing misdemeanour federal charges, Willis said. The woman, who was protesting against President Donald Trump's separation of migrant families, was arrested after almost four hours.

Trump said during a Montana campaign rally she should have been left alone until she made a decision to come down on her own. "Children shouldn't be separated from their parents, especially on a holiday like this".

Under public pressure, Trump later halted his policy of taking children from their detained parents. "Only a coward would rip a tender-aged child from a mother".

A protester is seen on the Statue of Liberty in New York, New York, US, July 4, 2018 in this picture obtained from social media. The sign was taken down about an hour after being discovered.
