Operating profit is expected to come to 14.8 trillion won ($13.2 billion) for the April-June period, higher than the 14.07 trillion won in the same period in 2017, but down from the record 15.64 trillion won of the previous quarter.

This is expected to be a drag on profit growth when the Korean conglomerate posts second quarter earnings on Friday.

The iPhone X's weaker performance also affects Samsung's bottom line, as its Display division is the sole provider of those expensive iPhone X OLED panels.

Samsung reports that, during Q2 2018, the company saw a Consolidated Operating Profit of about 14.8 trillion won, with Consolidated Sales of about 58 trillion won. But as early as now, analysts are viewing its second quarter performance as the first decrease in seven quarters. The Galaxy S9 has some great Android alternatives out there - ironically, majority are iPhone X clones. The device will employ foldable display panels, which is expected to go into mass production this summer.

"We are preparing for foldable phones very intensely. They will provide a good experience to consumers if we make them well", Koh said at the time.

KitGuru Says: This is evidence of how competitive the smartphone space is getting when even Samsung are having issues selling their flagship devices.

The lack of design change coupled with incremental upgrades such as a specs bump, a minor camera upgrade along with the variable aperture mode was not sufficient to turn the tides in the company's favor. Furthermore, the report asserts that the Samsung SDI is developing a foldable phone with V-shaped battery.
