  • Reports Show Lopez Obrador With Landlside Win in Mexico Election

Mexico is now renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement - known as NAFTA - with the United States and Canada.

A new president has been elected there.

"The people are fed up", Zuniga said.

Motorists are cruising up and down the central Paseo de la Reforma honking horns to the tune of "Viva Mexico!" and waving Mexican flags from vehicle windows and moonroofs.

The pair spent part of the 2016 Christmas holiday together in Mexico, and in September Mr Lopez Obrador toured the House of Commons with the Labour leader.

He added "I recognize his triumph".

Addressing the domestic challenges of Mexico, Lopez Obrador said eradicating corruption and impunity will be the primary mission of his government and he will "not fail" the Mexican people.

Mexico's new president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he would pursue friend and foe alike in a crackdown on corruption after voters handed him a powerful mandate for government with a landslide election victory on Sunday. The peso fell more than 1 percent against the USA dollar overnight as Lopez Obrador was elected.

Jose Antonio Meade, 49, is Mexico's former finance minister. He conceded defeat in a televised speech. "But it has to be made clear that he has to deliver what he promises and not become like the rest", he said.

His detractors argue he would set the country back decades with an economic policy of state.

Lopez Obrador won thanks to overwhelming anger at the status quo and his success at presenting himself as an agent of change.

Lopez Obrador speaks to reporters after the meeting to discuss his transition to office in December, aiming to ensure an orderly transfer of power after a heated and polarizing campaign.

"The tendency favors Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador". In the elections for Congress, his MORENA party and its allies could win majorities in both chambers, according to projections based on results still trickling in. The central state of Guanajuato was expected to go to a candidate of the conservative National Action Party. Exit polls for the presidential race have not yet been released.

In this photo released by Mexico's presidential press office, Lopez Obrador, right, is escorted by current President Enrique Pena Nieto through the National Palace.

Scheduled for 11 p.m., local time, in Mexico City, the nation's electoral regulator INE released a televised statement of its so-called rapid count, a key indicator of election results.

"It's worth cautioning that we still have little clarity on Amlo's economic policies", said Edward Glossop, an economist at Capital Economics.

"I have been surprised by the complacency around the win by Lopez Obrador, but there is a mindset of giving him the benefit of the doubt", Lawrence said.

Pena Nieto, whose approval ratings stood at only about 20 per cent, was limited by the constitution to a single term. Ricardo Anaya is the candidate of a right-left coalition.

Pena Nieto said Sunday that the vote "should reaffirm us in our democratic vocation".

Nevertheless, the pair began by exchanging a series of messages that demonstrated an apparent will to establish a renewed "respectful" relationship between the countries. Lorenzo Cordova says only four of the 156,807 polling places failed to open.

Indeed, AMLO has said a lot of things that Mexicans have wanted to hear for a long time.

Supporters of Lopez-Obrador celebrated wildly in Mexico City.

He also introduced him at a London event.

The 64-year-old candidate said fighting corruption would be the top goal of his government.
