  • FIBA Gilas Group B set up for explosive finish

Australia retained leadership in Group B of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers after it defeated the Philippines, 89-53, in a highly emotional match at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan, that saw a fight break in the third period that eventually halted the contest.

Up 79-48 with just over four minutes to play in the third quarter, Kickert reacted angrily to a foul on a teammate and elbowed an opponent.

Team mate Daniel Kickert retaliated immediately with an elbow of his own before the game descended into absolute chaos with a flurry of punches, kicks and chairs being thrown.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Thon Maker flew towards a Philippines player with his knee, while former National Basketball Association star Andray Blatche of the Philippines appeared to throw several punches at Australian players.

Basketball Australia Chief Executive Anthony Moore said the team would depart the Philippines on Tuesday morning instead of later in the day as planned. "It was of course the height of being unsportsmanlike but at the same time we appreciate that it's something that we have to be sorry about because it should never have happened", Roque said during a Palace press briefing.

"We apologize to our fans and will await the penalties to be handed down".

"FIBA will now open disciplinary proceedings against both teams".

"I would wait until the sanctions come down from FIBA then Basketball Australia can make a decision based on whether they thought they were appropriate or not", Black said.

"You see little altercations between players on court, but when it spills over you've got the Filipino bench, staff coming on and throwing punches, throwing chairs, it was a frightening situation."

"Basketball's worldwide governing body has opened disciplinary hearings against Australia and the Philippines".

Ejected from the game on the Gilas side were Talisay City-native Pogoy, naturalised player Andray Blatche, Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro, Carl Bryan Cruz, Calvin Abueva, Troy Rosario, Japeth Aguilar, and Matthew Wright.

"We want to appeal to everybody to please settle down", he said. "It is not only a universal human reaction in a team sport, but for those who have played the game, looking after each other is part of the brotherhood among team members", Angara said.

Moore said Basketball Australia later apologised to the Philippines Basketball Association. "I found that very unusual, in a tinderbox environment to continue like that".

In further weird scenes after the game was abandoned, the Filipino team were seen smiling and taking selfies on court, something Moore described as "strange".
