  • Tiger Woods struggles to keep successful round together Saturday at the Quicken Loans National tournament. More

The final round of the 2018 Quicken Loans National will play itself out on Sunday at TPC Potomac, and to say that all eyes will be on Tiger Woods might be an understatement.

Francesco Molinari of Italy celebrates on the 18th hole after winning the Quicken Loans National golf tournament at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

Molinari carded eight-under-par 62 in the final round at TPC Potomac to become the first Italian victor on the United States-based circuit since Toney Penna in 1947. Molinari closed with back-to-back birdies to shoot 65 and share the lead, two strokes ahead of Americans Ryan Armour and Zac Blair on 199 with Andrew Landry on 200 and Kevin Streelman, who set the course record Friday, sixth on 201. Molinari led the field in greens in regulation and on Sunday posted a gaudy 2.236 strokes gained/putting mark with his custom Bettinardi DASS BBZero with a skull and crossbones stamp in the rear cavity in an Italian flag-themed paintfill.

A spectacular chip-in and four putts beyond 15 feet were among his seven birdies, the 14-time Major victor sharing 11th on five-under 135 after 36 holes at TPC Potomac course, only four strokes behind U.S. co-leaders Brian Gay, Beau Hossler and Ryan Armour.

He won a World Golf Championship in Shanghai in 2010, though the PGA Tour did not recognize the HSBC Champions as an official win until a year later. Woods tied for fourth, his best result since a runner-up finish at the Valspar Championship three months ago, though he was 10 shots behind.

Chris Wood also was at 8 under until two bogeys over his last four holes for a 73. "I thought something in the mid-60s would have been a good score and I was able to shoot that". I didn't get off to a good start. I'm very proud of the way I played today. "But it's just a formality, and I think it's different anyway to win on USA soil", Molinari said.

Golf is just better when Tiger is on his game. He pulled away when he reached the back nine.

An opening bogey, and a disappointing par five at the second offered little hint of the fireworks to come, but a 15-foot par save at the third lifted his confidence.

The technicality irked the Italian a little but becoming the first player from his native land to win on US soil since Toney Penna in 1945 was certainly some decent solace.

Woods birdied four holes in a row in Round 3, at Nos. 4-7.

Starting the day at three-under, Lahiri celebrated his 31st birthday with a birdie on 10th, his first hole of the day.

"I've hit the ball well in this stretch", he said. It still provided a tough test, but 12 players shot 8 under or better thanks to greens that were far softer than previous year.

"I don't know if the course is going to be set-up like that but you just never know as it's been warm over there, and the grass has probably been growing".
