Dangerous, prolonged heat expected in Kansas City metro area into the weekend

  • The Weather Channel stated that strong upper-level ridges of high pressures- or'heat domes- contribute to the hot temperatures that will rack the US this weekend

Eighteen states from New Mexico to MI have issued heat advisories, warnings or watches, making up a heat dome that is descending on 60 million people.

The three-day advisory lasts from noon Saturday until 10 p.m. Monday.

Between 3 to 4 p.m. the high is expected to hit 96 degrees, said Charles Mott, National Weather Service meteorologist, with the low at 81 degrees Sunday morning. The heat will be more than enough to cause problems, but the humidity will be high as well.

"The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a unsafe situation in which heat illnesses are likely", the service said in a warning for Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States. Those heat warnings are already in place in the Upper Midwest, and that air is heading toward the Northeast this weekend.

In order to stay safe we will need to ensure a few things: make sure you are hydrated with water and/or electrolyte replacement beverages.

"It will be a sunny, hot and humid Sunday with a high in the upper 90s", he said.

Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an air quality index value of 100 for ozone. Heat stroke is an emergency - call 911. Young children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles. Highs in the Twin Cities on Sunday should be in the lower 80s. Heat exhaustion is when someone might feel faint, have excessive sweating, be cool and pale with clammy skin, feel nauseous, have a rapid or weak pulse and have muscle cramps.

The brunt of the recent heat spell arrives Thursday in Kansas City, but don't expect too much relief once the sun goes down.

Anyone who'll be working or otherwise spending time outside between now and Monday should take extra precautions. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. This is unsafe for anyone working outside and for those without air conditioning, it can be life-threatening.
