Melania Trump expected to visit west Phoenix shelter for migrant children Thursday

  • Under Obama if children crossed the border with their parents they were only separated if officials suspected the adult of human trafficking smuggling posing a national security risk or when their parenthood could not be verified

A total of 121 kids are being held there, including 81 separated from their parents. "Como estas?" the first lady said in Tucson, greeting the children.

This time, she was wearing simple white pants with a thin black track stripe running halfway up the side, a black boat neck top with a 3/4 sleeve (how Audrey Hepburn of her), and black flats.

In Tucson, Melania Trump met with border patrol agents and toured prison-like cells holding immigrants on a military base, usually for a few days after they are first caught crossing the border. "Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!"

Their visit comes despite fears of mass protests from United Kingdom critics of the US President.

However, that trip was overshadowed by her choice of fashion. But she was clearly walking a line between highlighting the plight of immigrant families and promoting law enforcement.

In Phoenix, her motorcade swept past a protest of several dozen and a large, inflatable depiction of the president in a Ku Klux Klan robe.

The legal situation for immigrant children has also changed, Grisham added, "and she's anxious to learn how they're implementing the new process".

There is a Phoenix police presence outside the shelter Thursday morning. Her staff says she has good intentions, but that message was muddied last week when she visited the border in Texas.

"She's learning that these people at HHS facilities are providing some outstanding care under hard circumstances", said Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's spokeswoman. Do u? the 48-year-old mother of one and former model, herself an immigrant from Slovenia, played safe in white trousers and a black top.

It was a series of rooms in a semi-circle, with windows out into the centre control room.

In Arizona, she offered gratitude to the immigration officials, including those from ICE, which some Democrats have suggested should be abolished. She brightened up when a very small boy darted out of the room and stared at her. She said, "It's incredible, as young as 6 years old, you know, someone would leave them".

The visit drew more attention for a jacket Mrs. Trump wore that read, "I really don't care, do u?" on the back. Many have yet to be reunited. According to Michael Humphries from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations, the Arizona ports of entry have had 1,100 unaccompanied minors since October 1, 2017.

Maybe Melania Trump does care this time.

She wore a simple black three-quarter sleeve black shirt and white slacks on Thursday.

"If she could only open her eyes and take a look at the reality - really listen to people - I think we'd have a different picture here", she said.

"She cares about children deeply", Grisham told USA TODAY aboard the first lady's plane.

"It's great to be here", Trump said to the group.

Melania Trump is headed toward the southern US border for the second time in a week. On Thursday when she boarded the plane in D.C., the White House press pool observed nothing unusual about her attire. Her spokeswoman would not immediately confirm her destination, citing security concerns.

Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said 1,600 people, including 539 in families, tried to enter the United States illegally the day before.

The goal of her visit is to provide more information to President Trump so she can "encourage family reunification" as she urges Congress "to fix our broken immigration system", Grisham said.

Seventeen states, including Washington, New York and California, are suing President Donald Trump's administration in an effort to force officials to reunite migrant families who have been separated at the US-Mexico border.

Sessions said that refusing to prosecute adults crossing illegally into the U.S. would be a disservice to the children they bring with them. It had the words "I really don't care". The girl then gave the first lady a high five, and the pair fist-bumped.
