  • Poland striker Robert Lewandowski has endured a disappointing tournament

Poland have been one of the biggest disappointments of this World Cup, two years after reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 where they went out on penalties to eventual champions Portugal and after finishing top of their qualifying group for the World Cup in Russian Federation.

While the Samurai Blue lost, the tiebreaker between them and Senegal went down to fair play points.

Russian Federation is holding its first time ever edition of the FIFA World Cup, which kicked off in Moscow with a spectacular opening show at the Luzhniki Stadium on the night of June 14.

The Samurai Blue needed a draw to confirm their place in the knockout stage after they beat Colombia and drew with Senegal in the previous two games, reversing low expectations at the start of the tournament.

For after Colombia scored against Senegal in the 74th minute, putting qualification in Japan's hands, coach Akira Nishino ordered his players to take no risks, an approach that slowed the game and earned resounding boos from the crowd.

Abdulateef: I see nothing wrong with Japan qualifying on fair play, the rules are there and they are through because of it.

Japan had the first chance of a mostly uneventful first half in the 13th minute, as Bednarek's poor pass allowed Yoshinori Muto to glide across the top of the box to the left corner, before picking out Yuto Nagamoto on the wing.

Under the system, a yellow card counts as minus one point, while an indirect red is minus three. Poland, happy to get a victory after two losses, did little to pressure the opposing side.

Poland had an early chance to take the lead in the 32nd minute when Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima stopped a header from Kamil Grosicki. The Japanese keeper did well to get across his line and claw the ball away.

The country selected 11 host cities to be the venues for the matches of the 2018 World Cup and they are Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and Samara.

Japan captain Makoto Hasebe said, "Japan are not the kind of team that can aim for a point and go and carry [a negative] plan out". It was a freakish game where neither side looked deserving of a win, but it was Poland who would go home with a win while Samurai Blue barely get by.

This was not the only game in the final round of the groups to lack any sense of intensity. "We want to change it tomorrow".

He said: "It's not an easy moment for us psychologically-speaking".

Such was the curious conclusion to the group stage at the World Cup on Thursday. Poland really didn't chase the ball down either as they had nothing to play for and were content with the scoreline.

He said he wanted Japan to be "more free and attacking in the next match" which will be against England or Belgium who play later on Thursday in Group G.
