LeBron James Is Officially An Unrestricted Free Agent

  • LeBron James right might be hoping to have Kawhi Leonard on his side this season

Houston and Cleveland could still conceivably work out a sign-and-trade, but doing so is far more complicated than simply making a deal would have been had James picked up his player option.

The league's moratorium period prevents players and teams from signing contracts until July 6 but they're able to verbally agree on terms.

Just because James declined the player option with Cleveland does not mean he can't resign.

On Saturday, LeBron James will make his decision weather to opt into the final year of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, worth $35.6 million, or become a free agent. Even that was a remote possibility. Several reports have suggested that a return to Cleveland is possible, but the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics also are expected to be in contention. According to reports, Kawhi told LeBron he would love for them to play together.

"I have no idea at this point", James said after the NBA Finals when asked if he's played his last game for the Cavaliers after getting swept by the Golden Warriors.

This is what everyone assumed would happen, as it gives James the freedom to go wherever he wants this summer.

Basketball superstars LeBron James and Kevin Durant have faced off against each other in two of the last three NBA Championships.

James had until 11:59 p.m. on Friday to take up the option to remain with Cleveland for at least one more season. The Rockets, for example, were likely hoping for James to opt in so they could facilitate a trade to bring him to Houston with Paul and James Harden. Both teams are considered potential suitors for the four-time MVP this summer. LeBron would join up with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons along with the rest of the talented supporting cast, and that team would instantly be the East favorite.

"We don't have that much experience with Joel and I and some of the younger people on our team and guys like that. Why would I think about doing something like that?'"
