Drogba: African teams are going backwards

Although he holds his players highly, Senegal head coach Aliou Cisse has admitted that they did not deserve to qualify for the round of 16 World Cup phase.

If teams finish level on points after the three group games, positions are determined by goal difference, then goals scored, head-to-head record and fair play record.

Yellow cards often are given more in the late stages of matches, with two issued to Senegal and one to Japan from the 90th minute on when they played on Sunday.

J.E Sarpong, the Veteran Ghanaian coach has said, the mentality and style of play by the African representatives in this year's FIFA World Cup has made it impossible for them to progress into the next stage of the competition or even win the ultimate. We would have preferred to be eliminated in another way but that's the way it works and we knew that those were the regulations.

The fair play measure was introduced in 2015 to prevent the drawing of lots.

"We do hope that we'll hear good news after he's gone for his check-up and we'll get a clear idea of what happened".

Senegal fans cheer before the start of the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup Group H football match between Senegal and Colombia at the Samara Arena in Samara on June 28, 2018.

Cisse said it was "sad" and a "shame" for Senegal to go out in such a way, and conceded that maybe his players had been too committed in their tackling.

While the fair play tiebreaker is far from flawless, it's likely better than what would have been the case had Senegal and Japan also been tied on yellow cards - the final remaining tiebreaker that Federation Internationale de Football Association has, in that case, is the drawing of lots.

A teacher, Mrs Rita Oge-Ali, however, said that the problem of African teams at the World Cup went beyond biased officiating.

"This is the first time we've used it at a World Cup, so we will review it".

"Africa should evolve a viable system of football and others sports development which would prepare its teams adequately to surmount officiating and related antics". Note: According to Federation Internationale de Football Association rules, if two teams are on same points, have same goal difference, scored equal number of goals and are equal on all head-to-head counts, the teams are separated by Fairplay points.
