For the first time in coach Oscar Tabarez's tenure, both forwards scored in the same game and they couldn't have chosen a better time: The convincing 3-0 defeat of host Russian Federation secured Uruguay's status as group victor and as one of the most solid teams of the tournament's opening stage after taking a full nine points. He boasted the best pass completion of any Uruguay player and also made the joint-most interceptions (3), to help his team control the game for long spells. Both are already assured of progressing to the round of 16.

Russian Federation and Uruguay face off for the first place in Group A today Monday at 7:30 pm (IST) at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Dzyuba sliced Russia's best second-half chance wide of the post in the 76th minute and they nearly conceded further when Akinfeev was forced to make fine late saves from Giorgian De Arrascaeta and Cristian Rodriguez. Cavani poked it home for Uruguay's third goal.

A pinpoint free-kick from the Barcelona star and an own goal from Denis Cheryshev put Uruguay 2-0 up inside 23 minutes in Samara before Edinson Cavani added their late third in Samara. He will also break his nation's record for World Cup appearances, with 14.

Cavani finally got his goal with a simple finish inside the six-yard box after a Diego Godin header was well saved as Uruguay won only their second game ever against Russian Federation, the other being in the 1970 World Cup, to set up a tie against the runners up of Group B.

"It's clear that they have top notch players, while we have very good players, too", Cherchesov said. "On the one hand, we lost, on the other - a slap in a certain moment is useful, so we are waiting for information about the 1/8 finals opponent", Cherchesov sums up.

They will take on the Group B victor on July 1.

Instead of Ronaldo, it was Ricardo Quaresma who scored for the Portuguese.

Uruguay got off to a positive start when Matias Vecino whistled a long-range effort just wide of Akinfeev's right post with less than two minutes gone as the South Americans served warning of their intent.

Note that in the first half of Saudi Arabia has not implemented a penalty.

The Three Lions have cruised to the knockout stages and captain Harry Kane is leading the scoring at the tournament so far with five goals, including a hat trick.

The introduction of Fedor Smolov and Daler Kuzaiev early in the second session improved Russia's organisational play.
