Thiago Silva delighted as training-ground time with Brazil star pays off

  • Brazil are in action against Serbia at the World Cup on Wednesday

However, while their superstar front men were making little headway at the other end, having conceded three goals in their previous 12 games, Brazil's often-overlooked defence again showed their mettle as Serbia threw more men forward.

Goals by Paulinho and Thiago Silva steered a much-improved Brazil to a 2-0 victory over a battling but ultimately outclassed Serbia on Wednesday and into a World Cup second-round meeting with Mexico.

Paulinho scored the victor in the first half, and Thiago Silva scored in the second to set up a date with Mexico in the round of 16.

He also toiled tirelessly in midfield as the five-time world champions produced a reassuring performance.

Having opened his Russian Federation 2018 account with the second of Brazil's two late goals in Friday's 2-0 win over Costa Rica, Neymar was again impressive.

It remains to be seen how long Marcelo will be out for, but if he is set to miss further games, Brazil have a top-quality replacement in Luis.

Neymar had the best chance of the opening half hour when he forced Serbia goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic to palm his shot away.

Paulinho gave his team the lead when he met a lofted ball from Philippe Coutinho in the 36th minute.

Serbia repeatedly struggled to contain Brazil's fleet-footed attack.

Mitrovic also hailed the belief in the Serbia squad despite the 2-1 defeat to Switzerland on Friday.

A speculative cross from Milinkovic-Savic had Alisson scrambling, while Mitrovic headed a cross from Rukavina straight at the feet of the keeper in the 65th minute.

Brazil need just a draw to secure qualification for the last 16.

The second goal for Brazil eventually arrived after 68 minutes as Thiago Silva lost his marker before glancing home a header at the near post.
