Jackson - whose most famous child, King of Pop Michael Jackson, died nearly nine years to the day before him - had been ailing from cancer.

Jackson, 89, had been afflicted with a number of health issues in recent years, including suffering a stroke that left him with temporarily blurred vision, multiple heart attacks, and dementia.

In a 2007 interview with The Chicago Defender, Joe Jackson explained that his form of discipline was not unlike any other black family of the era. In the 2003 ITV documentary Living With Michael Jackson, the singer told interviewer Martin Bashir that his father would oversee the Jackson 5's intense rehearsals "with a belt in his hand" and "tear you up, really get you" if one of the brothers missed a step.

"He was very strict, very hard, very stern". "I'm glad I was tough, because look what I came out with", he said. "I'd start to regurgitate".

In fact, Jackson acknowledged Michael did not exactly have the most idyllic of childhoods, saying it may have influenced the public's perception of The King of Pop.

Joe Jackson wanted to be a music star but it didn't work out for him. Michael's daughter Paris has previously opened up about losing her dad, whose hits included Beat It, Man in the Mirror and The Way You Make Me Feel. Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon have denied that their father was abusive.

In 1969, Jackson negotiated a deal for the quintet with Motown.

"My mother told me I would fight back even when I was very little, but I don't remember that", Michael Jackson wrote in a memoir. He formed The Jackson Brothers in 1963 - with sons Tito, Jackie and Jermaine - and began entering them in local talent shows. Each eventually pursued a solo career, with Janet achieving particularly great fame.

"We were nervous rehearsing because he sat in the chair and he had this belt in his hand and if you didn't do it the right way, he would tear you up", Michael Jackson said about his father in a 2002 interview with United Kingdom journalist Martin Bashir. By the time his 1982 album Thriller made Michael pop music's biggest star, Joe's management control was contracting. The rest of the Jackson 5 followed suit in 1983. Janet would also separate herself from her father professionally by 1986.

He had 11 kids, including 10 with his estranged wife Katherine, and one, with Cheryl Terrell.

He re-entered the news after Michael's sudden death in June 2009.

Joe Jackson, born in Alabama on July 26, 1928, was the eldest of six children of Samuel and Chrystal Jackson.

For many years before that, he and his wife had lived in an estate they built in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley where he had hoped his children would remain with him at least until they were married and perhaps even afterward.

Nine of the Jackson children have scored hits on the Billboard charts.
