Mohamed Salah signed off from Russian Federation with a goal but saw his Egypt team suffer a late defeat as Saudi Arabia snatched a 2-1 win in an entertaining game in Volgograd.

This marked Egypt's third defeat in a row in the World Cup as the Pharaohs finished at the bottom of Group A with zero points.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah gave Egypt the lead with a brilliant chip over goalkeeper Yasser Al-Mosailem before Saudi Arabia were awarded two penalties in quick succession.

Six minutes later, Saudi Arabia were awarded a penalty for a handball against Ahmed Fathi.

Salem Al-Dawsari's volley ensured Saudi Arabia claim their first win in over 24 years of the Federation Internationale de Football Association organised tournament.

"We've been told over and over again we were too defensive but we qualified for the World Cup with the same approach, and for the first time in 28 years", he said.

As the game entered the final quarter, Housain Al-Mogahwi was given the chance to score his first global goal at the back post but the midfielder's header was tipped over the crossbar by El-Hadary.

Salman Alfaraj got the Saudis level with a penalty kick in first-half stoppage time after Ali Gabr brought down Fahad Almuwallad in the area.

But after a VAR-induced review that took nearly five minutes to complete, Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan chose to stick with his original decision.

He smashed the age record set by Colombia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon, who was aged 43 years and three days when he played against Japan in Brazil in 2014.

With two games played, Saudi Arabia are one of just four teams still without a goal at this World Cup, joined by Morocco, Peru and Costa Rica.

Almuwallad had earlier missed a chance to equalize when El Hadary saved his penalty.

This was Egypt's seventh match at the World Cup without winning (D2 L5) - only Honduras have played more times at the World Cup without recording a win (9).
