World Cup Fans in Mexico Triggered an Artificial Earthquake Just by Jumping

  • Mexico will provide a stern test for Germany in opener

Mexicans jumping for joy at their country's surprise World Cup victory over defending champions Germany shook the ground so hard they set off natural disaster detectors, The Independent reports.

"This is an experienced team".

"It was a wake-up call and there has never been such strong communication within the team as after the game against Mexico".

Germany were humbled to a 1-0 draw by Mexico in their opening game of the World Cup, but coach Joachim Loew sounded confident the world champions would quickly make amends.

The result leaves Germany three points behind Mexico and Sweden in the table, with their upcoming clash with Sweden on June 23 now a must-win game. Playing in Group F, Mexico next faces South Korea on Saturday, with a game against Sweden the following Wednesday, and it stands a very good chance of reaching the next round after toppling mighty Germany.

The tie was decided by an emphatic strike from PSV Eindhoven's Hirving Lozano, who finished off a swift counter-attack with a cool finish midway through the first-half.

"It's not true that Mexico's goal caused an natural disaster". The 22-year-old scored in the 35th minute with a low shot past Manuel Neuer. "That can happen because at a World Cup you come up against tough opponents".

Elated fans waved Mexican flags and donned traditional "sombrero" hats at the iconic Angel of Independence monument in downtown Mexico City as they sang the country's unofficial soccer anthem, "Cielito Lindo", or "Pretty Little Sky", a popular folksong.

Meanwhile, the Mexican fans were cheering wildly between plates of nachos and chili spiced drinks at the El Rincon Mexicano on St. Clair Ave. W.

"I put it down to stress, first match nerves, that's true for me too", the Brazil boss said.

"One thing I will not be doing is think about the round of 16". "We have made history in a way that no one ever has".

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto congratulated the squad on Twitter, saying "Mexico competes and wins against the best in the world".
