Melania Trump's Jacket Appears to Mock The Immigrant Children She Visited

  • Explanation Officials from the Upbring New Hope Children's Center spoke to the First Lady before she toured the facility to meet children

"We just have a tremendous passion for working with these children", said program director Roy De La Cerda.

Trump's executive order suggests the government intends to hold the families indefinitely by challenging a 1997 court ruling known as the Flores Settlement, which places a 20-day limit on how long children, alone or with their parents, can be detained.

"I'm here to learn about your facility", Trump told a group of officials at the center.

In McAllen, Texas, Melania Trump visited the Upbring New Hope Children's Shelter, a federally-funded facility that houses some 55 children from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, ages five to 17.

The awkwardness of the situation wasn't lost on many online, including Dictionary.com, who said it showed indifference.

She's now getting slammed for her very poor choice of clothing when she went to meet these children.

A separate case by the American Civil Liberties Union challenging family separations - but not the "zero tolerance" policy - argues that families have the right to remain unified. The outcry led the president to reverse course under political pressure and sign an executive order Wednesday to end the policy. However, his policy of criminally prosecuting illegal border-crossers remains.

When asked what message the first lady's jacket meant to send, a spokeswoman said: "It's a jacket". Similarly, she has worn culturally-inspired outfits during visits to both Saudi Arabia and Japan.

The first lady's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, reportedly responded saying, "It's a jacket. We're all bothered by it". Trump is a former model with a keen understanding of her own image. The way I see it, there's only one explanation for why she wore what she wore: She wanted to send a message.

Mrs. Trump, whose focus as first lady is on child well-being, appears to have been among those pushing her husband to act. More than 2,300 children have been separated from their parents, and thousands of families are likely to remain fractured.

The political compromise the first lady had sought so far has not materialized.

"It is my hope that Members of Congress will finally reach across the aisle and work together to solve this problem with common sense immigration reform that secures our borders and keeps families together", she added.

It was not the first time Melania Trump raised eyebrows for her fashion choices when out in the field: previous year she wore needle-thin high stiletto heels to observe the devastation wrought by Hurricane Harvey.
