Six months from now the sun will reach its southern extreme and pass overhead for people on the Tropic of Capricorn, and northerners will experience their shortest days of the year, at the winter solstice. But basically, the solstice is based on the earth's rotation around the sun and the angle of the earth's tilt in relation to the sun.

Wrapped in jackets and blankets, thousands of people gathered at Britain's Stonehenge for summer solstice, watching the sun rise over the Neolithic monument and welcoming the longest day of the year. All this to mark the spot on the horizon where the sun returns each year to rest for a while before moving south again.

Among the rituals that take place at Stonehenge, white cloaked and hooded "modern druids" stand among the stones to welcome the first rays of the sunlight for the summer.

What is the summer solstice?

If you're in Manhattan, you could then visit Solstice in Times Square: Mind Over Madness Yoga, a day of free yoga classes to celebrate the longest day of the year and the beginning of the summer season. Thousands of visitors are expected.

Following the winter solstice, the Northern Hemisphere begins to get more sunlight; the daytime and nighttime hours are almost equal at the spring equinox, which takes place in March. It's also lower in the sky, so its light is less intense.

Conversely, the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere is the day of the year with the shortest amount of daylight there.

What Are Solstices and Equinoxes?

The sun will rise at 5:31 a.m. and set at 8:36 p.m. today.
