  • New Zealand's Prime Minister arrives at hospital to give birth. She's the first pregnant world leader since 1990

Ms Ardern took office as New Zealand's third female prime minister a year ago and announced in January she was expecting a baby with Gayford, a television fishing show presenter.

She is the second elected world leader to give birth while holding office after late Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who gave birth to daughter Bakhtawar in 1990.

"Welcome to our village wee one", Ms Ardern wrote on Instagram. The prime minister's office brought food for reporters waiting at the hospital.

New Zealand's first women prime minister, Helen Clark, wrote on Twitter: "What a proud day. gender quality in action".

Ardern, who was elected past year and announced her pregnancy in January, plans to take six weeks of parental leave.

Ms Ardern announced she was pregnant in a Facebook post in January this year. But she didn't take maternity leave, meaning that first goes to Ardern.

Announcing the pregnancy, Ms Ardern said she would be "PM and a mum", while Mr Gayford, a television presenter for a fishing show, will be "first man of fishing" and become a stay at home dad.

Her office says both mum and the baby are doing well.

Ms Ardern had played down the chances of any disruption arising from her absence, saying she and Mr Peters would be in regular contact.

"It is with great joy that I, on behalf of the Green Party, congratulate the Prime Minister and Clarke Gayford on the wonderful news that their baby girl has been born", co-leader Marama Davidson said.

Ardern became Prime Minister of New Zealand last October, after forging a three-way coalition only several months after taking the reigns of the Labour Party.

She thanked everyone for their kindness and wishes.

Not really. New Zealand's opposition politicians were largely quite supportive.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern addresses Parliament in May in Wellington, New Zealand.

She plans to take six weeks off work, during which time Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters will cover for her.

The birth is being marked as a sign of progress for women.

"It is a woman's decision about when they choose to have children and it should not predetermine whether or not they are given a job or have job opportunities", she said then.
