Stuttgart Open: Federer to face Raonic in finals

  • Milos Raonic

Similar to a year ago, Federer came back during grass season, but went out in the first round at the Mercedes tournament in Stuttgart, an event he's surprisingly never won.

Raonic rescued a break point to serve out the first set after edging in front early on, before winning a tie-break easily in the second.

Kyrgios grabbed a fast 2-0 lead after unleashing a flying forehand pass on the stretch but Federer rallied back to move 5-4 ahead before a flicked effort at the net confirmed his place in the final 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 7-6 (7-5).

But, if he wants to stay at the top of the heap for Wimbledon, he will have to win the tournament in Halle, Germany next week.

"It's a really positive step forward for me".

In a decisive tiebreak after no breaks in the second set, a double fault from Raonic paved the way for Federer, playing his first tournament in 11 weeks after giving the claycourt campaign a miss, to claim victory.

"I've played good tennis this week", Raonic said. "It was close and it could have gone either way naturally but I am happy that I have got it and got back to world No. 1 next Monday". A win on Sunday will give the Swiss legend his 98th ATP title, nine titles behind Jimmy Connors, one of the few records Federer doesn't own (yet).

Frenchman Pouille, 24, kept Raonic at bay on serve, including an enthralling 12-minute trade-off at 3-3, until the pair entered an inevitable second set tie- break.

Federer, who has won 15 successive matches on grass since being beaten in his opening match in Stuttgart last June, knew he had to win on Saturday to knock Rafael Nadal off the top of the rankings.

"I'm playing better with each match, I'm there at the important moments in the games, that's an important thing".

Milos Raonic hasn't had the easiest season in 2018.

"I was hoping to play a couple matches here but I have played four and won them all".

Federer also won their quarterfinal a year ago at Wimbledon while Raonic took their 2016 semifinal meeting at the All-England Club. But I'm happy I got it and get back to World No.1 next Monday, so it's very exciting.

It will be Raonic's first final since the 2017 Istanbul Open.
