Senegal started their World Cup campaign in Russian Federation on a positive note as they picked up a surprising 2-1 victory over Poland in the Group F clash on Tuesday. Protecting a two-goal lead Poland did find a way back into the game with a Grzegorz Krychowiak header, but that would not be enough to level with the Africans when the whistle blew.

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse has given a tactical insight into their 2-1 victory over Poland in their World Cup opener on Tuesday.

Senegal punish Polish mistake for Africa's first win at the 2018 Fifa World Cup finals.

Nawalka sent on Southampton defender Jan Bednarek at halftime - Jakub Blaszczykowski making way on his 100th global appearance - as Cionek's own goal ensured that Poland's 32-year wait for a clean sheet at the World Cup goes on. It's always hard when you let in simple goals, especially the second.

Senegal were not at their best in the first half, but it was they who did most of the running and looked to make things happen.

"They tried more than us and wanted to play football".

Senegal were hoping to avoid joining their four fellow African sides - Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunisia - in losing their opening match, and fared little better initially, but they had the matchwinner in Niang.

Niang outsprinted goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to reach the ball about 40 yards from the net, knocked the ball forward and tapped it in for Senegal's second fluky goal of the night.

An own goal by Thiago Cionek late in the first half preceded the appalling defensive mix-up that let Niang score into an empty net on the hour. With Senegal yet to face Japan, realistically, only one of the two sides can now qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

Senegal resume their World Cup campaign against Japan on Sunday before facing Colombia.

All eyes will be on Poland hitman Robert Lewandowski, whose 16 World Cup qualifying goals topped Europe in the 2018 World Cup cycle.

"We managed really well to get them out of their comfort zone in the first half". Cionek, near the penalty spot, lifted his right leg and deflected the ball past Szczesny's other side for the fourth own-goal of the tournament.

Lewandowski was no different against Senegal, landing just one shot on target; a free-kick, which illustrates the lack of service he received.

Senegal midfielder Mbaye Niang saw the signal from the referee to re-enter following treatment for an injury and jogged along the center line. A few hours after Senegal's win, Egypt then also lost its second match, 3-1, against Russian Federation.
