"It has become untenable for the BJP to continue the alliance in Jammu and Kashmir in the situation that has developed today".

Militants had rejected the government's offer of "non-initiation of combat operations" in Jammu and Kashmir, which home minister Rajnath Singh had announced it at the onset of Ramzan, and continued targetting security forces and various locations in the state during the holy month.

What led to the split?

Yesterday, BJP made a decision to pull out of its alliance with PDP, leading to the fall of the state government. "There is grave concern over the deteriorating security situation in the state".

With the President's directive, the reins of Jammu and Kashmir are now back in the hands of Governor NN Vohra who will be running the state for the fourth time now, and will be completing 10 years as J&K Governor on June 25. "Reconciliation is the key", she told The Indian Express.

This uneasiness marked the entire three years the coalition was in power.

The coalition government was formed in 2015 after extended and hard negotiations, since the two parties hold diametrically opposed views on many major issues, including the law that exempts Indian military personnel from criminal prosecution in the violence-wracked Himalayan region.

Last week, India rejected a United Nations report that accused it of having used excessive force in the disputed region to kill and wound civilians since 2016.

The use of pellet guns to disperse protests was condemned around the world as thousands of civilians suffered injuries.

When the PDP and BJP stitched the alliance together in March 2015, former chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed had described the coalition as the coming together of the North Pole and South Pole.

"I have told Governor that since no party has the mandate to form government, he will have to impose Governor rule in the state", he said. The workers stood by all the odds.

"The insistence of PDP for extension of suspension of (anti-militancy) operations and soft approach towards militants, Pakistan and separatists were hurting nationalistic sentiments across country", state BJP chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi said, adding the PDP had underestimated BJP's resolve, thinking it would always have its ways in all matters.

The state will now be ruled by the governor until elections take place.

Forming a government will require the support of 44 of the 89 legislators in the state assembly.

Having won all its seats from Jammu and Ladhakh, the BJP was apparently sensing a growing sense of dissatisfaction in the two regions with the performance of the coalition government.

However, the PDP pretended to be surprised by the announcement.

The central rule came to an end on 5 January 2009, after National Conference leader Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the youngest chief minister of the state.

The BJP move came a day after New Delhi ended a cease-fire against militants for Ramadan.
