Trump orders Pentagon to create USA 'space force'

  • Trump tells Pentagon to create “Space Force”

In a surprise announcement today at the third meeting of the White House's newly reconvened Space Council, President Donald J. Trump announced his intention to create a new Space Force within the U.S. Armed Forces.

But his directive will task the Defense Department to begin the process of establishing the Space Force as the sixth branch of the USA armed forces.

"We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the Space Force - separate but equal".

"Marillyn Hewson, president and chief executive officer of Lockheed Martin Corp., left, and Dennis Muilenburg, chairman and chief executive officer of Boeing Co., attend a National Space Council meeting on Monday".

Mr. Rogers initially called for an independent space corps, but then retreated to pushing for creation of a new command dedicated to space within the Air Force. Currently, the Air Force is responsible for the vast majority - roughly 80 percent - of the military's space ventures.

Military officials, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, have pushed back on the idea the military should have a separate space force. He also reassured the public that it can't happen without the support of Congress, despite Trump's grandiose claims.

The president spoke earlier this year of his plans for a "space force" and explained his thinking behind it, saying: "I was saying it the other day because we're doing a tremendous amount of work in space". All three have refused to sign the U.N.'s resolution on Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space, according to CNN. This event was supposed to focus on the relatively sedate topic of space debris, but the freewheeling president had other ideas.

Trump said Monday that the United States' space program had been bogged down by politics and rising costs. Conceivably the 2019 NDAA that is now going through the legislative cycle could create the Space Force, Loverro said, although Congress would have to give the Defense Department at least one or two years to execute such a large reorganization.

The White House billed the effort as part of the president agenda to restore US leadership in space.

"We understand the President's guidance. Too many important missions at stake".

Joining Trump were Vice President Mike Pence (who heads up the recently revived space council), NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine, former astronaut Buzz Aldrin and members of his space council.

For the private sector's space activity, the primary effect of the policy is "more rapid and more accurate information on where they can launch", as well as "flexibility in launch windows", and satellites having "more time to put toward revenue-generating activities rather than maneuvering" to avoid collision risks, Pace said.
