Most Americans oppose immigrant family separation

  • Stephen Miller Was Driving Force Behind Trump Family Separation Policy

"Congressman Barletta is embracing this inhumane policy of separating children from their parents because he is an ideological extremist and one of President Trump's most loyal lapdogs", Steele said in a statement on Monday. Attorney General Jeff Sessions' zero tolerance announcement that the government will prosecute all unlawful immigrants as criminals set up a situation in which children are removed when their parents are taken into federal custody.

"The full impact of policy initiatives are not fully realized for 2-3 weeks following public messaging - however, some migrants already underway may temporarily halt to determine the effects of the new policy", the document states. As a result, children found making the illegal crossings along with those adults have been separated and sent to detention centers.

While the documents don't speak to the conceptualization of the policy or the internal deliberations that preceded it, they call into question the administration's justification for the policy.

A top adviser to Trump said Sunday that the president was not using the family separation as leverage to force Democrats to come to the table on other policy disputes, rebutting an unnamed White House official quoted by The Washington Post.

The president also continued to blame Democrats, tweeting in all caps "CHANGE THE LAWS!" "It is immoral. And it breaks my heart", she writes.

On Sunday, Democratic members of Congress paid a "surprise Father's Day visit" to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centre in New Jersey, demanding to see detainees separated from their children. "I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our global boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel".

But despite his calls for lawmakers to work together on immigration, Trump seemed to pour cold water on current attempts to draw up a centrist immigration bill. "I will tell you that nobody likes this policy", Conway told Chuck Todd on NBC's "Meet The Press". "I say it's very strongly the Democrats' fault", he said at the White House.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins of ME said she favors tighter border security, but expressed deep concerns about the child separation policy.

Asked whether the president was willing to end the policy, she said: "The president is ready to get meaningful immigration reform across the board". Religious groups, including some conservative ones, are protesting.

Trump's former chief strategist said Republicans would face steep consequences for pushing the compromise bill because it provides a path to citizenship for young "Dreamer" immigrants brought to the country illegally as children. On Friday, President Trump told Fox & Friends he would not sign the moderate one.
