I've believed that since we were 20 years old.

According to Mickelson's wife, Amy, the five-time major champion spoke with United States Golf Association executive director Mike Davis following outcry over his decision to hit a moving ball on the 13th green Saturday. "But toughen up, this was not meant that way".

The simple question, what happened over at 13?

Two-time US Open champion Curtis Strange added: "I've never seen anything like that from a world class player in my life." whereas LPGA star Christina Kim went even further, describing the scenes as "ghastly".

No, this was Mickelson's attempt to be the smartest guy in golf once again.

Mickelson knows how the media operates.

His playing partner surely did.

"He's a good man who had a bad moment", she said as she watched her husband sign autographs after his round. I think you see it in different sports people do these wacky things.

The incident didn't seem to dim Mickelson's enthusiasm.

If the former wasn't enough to get him kicked out of the Open, the latter should make everyone in golf take pause.

Mickelson said that he's wanted to accept this penalty on other occasions in his career - including some years on the 15 hole at the Masters, when his ball would run off into the creek - but that with this particular hole location Saturday, "I could still be out there, potentially".

He was taking advantage of the rules. I don't mean it [to be] disrespectful.

Mickelson walked off the green with an 8, then was told by a rules official that he'd be assessed a two-shot penalty for playing a moving ball. "You take the two shots and you move on".

Mickelson got his penalty, though it hardly mattered.

Worse yet, there was clearly some premeditation involved.

Mickelson later said he did not mean the shot to be disrespectful, saying there was "no question" the ball was going to roll off the green, and he chose to take the penalty rather than the alternative.

Mickelson has legions of fans, but he did not win himself any more this week.

"Honestly, I said to him, 'I can't help but laugh, '" he said. But Tony Finau teed off 33 minutes before Mickelson and managed to shoot a 4-under 66, so it wasn't like it was totally unplayable.

The reaction of some to Phil Mickelson setting the golfing world ablaze with his deliberate rule breaking is one of - who cares?

"When you have a championship that comes down to sheer luck, that's not right", he said. "It was amusing because I didn't think he hit that bad a chip shot from behind the green in the first place".

It's the type of thing you'd see a stroppy youngster perform, frustrated at their putt not going into the hole. What is he doing?' But I " m not a rules person, so if the rules say two-strokes, then that's what he should have gotten".
