The hope here is that Apple jumpstarts a shift within the wireless industry that will allow emergency responders to automatically locate mobile callers in most - if not all - scenarios.

Google is working on a similar system for Android phones, according to Android police, so calling 911 from your mobile phone should be a lot more effective in the next few years. The Cupertino, Calif., tech giant is partnering with RapidSOS, a New York-based emergency technology company, to integrate the ability to receive iPhone locations into 911 call centers' existing software. We firmly believe that the best technology should be available to 9-1-1 when it matters the most.

Apple said it's adding the new technology ahead of a Federal Communications Commission rule set for 2021 that requires phone carriers be able to locate emergency callers within 50 meters 80 percent of the time.

The iOS 12 feature is aimed at providing faster and more accurate information to first-responders and cutting emergency response times.

On Monday, Apple unveiled plans to work with 911 centers to automatically share the exact locations of iPhone users that need to call in an emergency.

Currently, about 80% of 911 calls come from mobile devices - but due to landline-era infrastructure it can be hard for 911 centers to quickly and accurately determine a mobile caller's location. The RapidSOS solution will benefit from the same underlying location solution, which Apple calls HELO and says uses cell towers, GPS, and Wi-Fi hardware to estimate the user's address. The new system will certainly come in incredibly handy in emergency situations, and here's to hoping Apple will eventually be able to bring it to other countries.

Apple is trying to solve a potentially unsafe emergency response infrastructure problem.

The location services at 911 call centers are based on outdated infrastructure from the era of landlines. HELO, as it's more commonly called, was first launched back in 2015, but it won't be the only technology Apple leverages in iOS 12's emergency sharing. While it will be turned on by default for all users who update to iOS 12 in the USA, there will be the option to opt out.

"It has not made the evolution into the digital era", he said, which has made it hard to extract better location data from the legacy system.
