GOP Rep. Hurd: Separating Kids From Parents 'Unacceptable'

  • Tour gives a glimpse inside Texas migrant youth shelter — cots soccer and a Trump mural

The US Department of Health and Human Services announced earlier in the week that it meant to open the shelter.

Asked if children will be kept in tents, Wolfe said the facility would have "soft-sided structures", but didn't immediately clarify what those structures would be.

The Trump administration began implementing what it calls a "zero-tolerance" policy with regard to immigrant families crossing the US-Mexico border illegally.

US protocol prohibits detaining children with their parents because the children are not charged with a crime, though the parents are.

- Walmart is not working with the Department of Homeland Security to create detention centers for migrants despite reports online claiming the two have been working together in recent years.

The children are each assigned a clinician to help them deal with separation trauma and mental-health issues.

"The kids are 16-year-old and 17-year-old boys", he said.

On Wednesday, for the first time since that policy was announced, and amid intense national interest after a us senator was turned away, federal authorities allowed a small group of reporters to tour the secretive shelter, the largest of its kind in the nation.

"Stop crossing the border illegally with children", Sessions said.

"Our goal is to reunite these children with their families as soon as we can do that", he told reporters Wednesday. He added, "I'd like to say it's un-American, but it's happening right now in America".

Melissa Lopez, executive director of the El-Paso-based Diocesan Migrant & Refugee Services, which offers legal screenings for unaccompanied minors, said her office has noticed a disturbing trend since the "zero tolerance" policy launched: younger children held in federal custody.

The reporter observed that almost every room in the facility was housing multiple children, despite it being constructed to house four.

On average, migrant children spend more than 50 days in HHS care while the agency identifies and screens potential sponsors - usually a relative living in the United States - who can assume custody. But the Trump administration has largely dismissed the complaints.

There has also been bipartisan pushback, with Democrats criticizing the separations and even some Republicans expressing reservations.

In an attempt to end "two-party rule", Johnathan Jenkins, a self-described "successful tech entrepreneur" from Euless Texas, is running for the U.S. Senate as an independent.
