  • At least 5 die when SUV crashes after being chased by Border Patrol, then deputy, Texas sheriff says

In a later interview, Boyd said the auto reached 100 miles per hour before the driver lost control and crashed.

Four people believed to be undocumented immigrants were pronounced dead on the scene with a fifth pronounced dead after being transported to a San Antonio hospital.

He said his deputies are often involved in chases pursuing people suspected of smuggling undocumented immigrants and drugs.

Boyd said the driver and one passenger of the passengers were the only USA citizens in the vehicle.

The crash was reported when Border Patrol agents attempted to stop an SUV in Dimmit County, reports said.

At least five people were killed after an SUV carrying illegal immigrants crashed following a high-speed chase near the Texas-Mexico border, the sheriff said.

Fourteen people were inside, including the driver and passenger.

Some injured were taken by helicopter to San Antonio, about 144.83 kilometres northeast.

Dimmit County, Texas Sheriff Marion Boyd said Border Patrol agents began chasing a Chevrolet Suburban around noon on Sunday. "The deputy actually took him into custody". He said the pursuit was the result of "good police work", and gave his support for the construction of a border wall.

Four victims were dead at the scene, Boyd said. "We dealt with him last week", Boyd said.

Representatives for both U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Dimmit County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to HuffPost's request for comment.
