MSNBC's Rachel Maddow on Thursday night zeroed in on a key fact about former FBI Director James Comey's investigation of Hillary Clinton's emails that has gone largely overlooked in the new Department of Justice inspector general report.

Trump said that he is not thinking about suspending the probe by Robert Mueller, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, who is investigating into allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 general election.

It also sharply rebuked FBI officials who traded politically charged, anti-Trump text messages even as the investigation into the campaign was under way.

"On August 8, 2016, Page had sent a message to Strzok asking "[Trump's] not ever going to become president, right? "No he's not. We'll stop it".

"The top people were awful", Trump said.

In a New York Times opinion piece released after the report, Comey said he disagreed with some conclusions but respected the watchdog's work.

The report criticized Comey for publicly announcing his recommendation against criminal charges for Clinton.

Comey was conducting the probe into the correspondence of presidential candidate Hilary Clinton, who used a private mail server when she was Secretary of State from 2009-2013.

In a tweet Friday morning, Trump called the report "a total disaster" for Comey. I did a great service to the people in firing him.

While the report was embarrassing for the FBI, it appeared to lack the kind of bombshell revelation that would significantly boost an effort by Trump and his allies to paint the FBI as corrupt and discredit the Russian Federation investigation.

Trump told Doocy that he is "actually proud because I beat the Clinton dynasty, I beat the Bush dynasty and now, I guess, hopefully, I'm in the process of beating very dishonest intelligence".

"It contains no evidence to make any reasonable person conclude that the Mueller investigation is anything other than independent, impartial & just as important today as it was before this report was issued", Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., wrote on Twitter after reading the report on Thursday.

But the nuanced findings provide no conclusions to support Republicans and Democrats who want to claim total vindication.

"We identified numerous instances in which Comey used a personal email account to conduct unclassified Federal Bureau of Investigation business", the 500-page report states. "But our review did not find evidence to connect the political views expressed in these messages to the specific investigative decisions that we reviewed".
