"This is the first Test match of Afghanistan after achieving Test status past year".

Several Afghan one-day players like Rashid Khan and Mohammed Nabi have performed well in the IPL series in India.

The squad comprises five spinners in Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Zahir Khan and left-arm spinner Hamza Kotak, who incidentally emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the recently concluded first-class competition. After becoming an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2001, it achieved the test playing status previous year.

While the sense of occasion can be overwhelming for the tourists who attained Test status only a year ago, Rahane said India will not approach this game any differently.

Afghan skipper Asghar Stanikzai called it a "very proud moment" as he strode onto the field for the toss with opposite number Ajinkya Rahane.

"We won't take them lightly", said Rahane.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shared a special message congratulating the Afghanistan Cricket Team for their Test debut. "His experience, his form - the way he was batting in the Asia Cup especially and also in the IPL. his experience playing those domestic games [will help us]".

With the Chinnaswamy track offering a bit of movement for the quicks, and some spin for the slower bowlers, the left-hander looked unperturbed as he took Rashid for three consecutive boundaries, including a six before launching the Mujeeb for another three back to back fours.

Even before the match between India and Afghanistan got underway in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, it was dubbed "historic".

Most cricket-loving Afghans were watching the match on TV back home as they prepared for a three-day public holiday marking the Muslim festival of Eid.

"They are all good players and have good experience in Test cricket".

Afghanistan cricketer Hashmatullah Shahidi carries his gear as he runs for shelter during sudden rains at a training session ahead of one-off test match against India in Bangalore, India, Wednesday, June 13, 2018.

Rashid Khan remains the Afghan side's biggest weapon - his googlies and flippers have proved to be a menace for batsmen in T20s, but there won't be hurried strokes or exaggerated strikes in Tests, he will have to continuously derive something off the pitch.
