  • GOP Drafts Bill Overturning Policy of Separating Families at Border

During a speech to law enforcement officers in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Thursday, Sessions said, "That is what the law calls for - and that is what we are going to do".

When a reporter mentioned Trump's party controlled both chambers of Congress, the president countered by arguing he needed a bigger majority in the Senate. The policy is leading to an increase in the number of detained immigrants being separated from their children.

"We are fixing family separation within this bill and have made changes to keep children with at least one of their parents", he said. "They're claiming it addressed separations, but clearly, when you put that in a bill that funds a wall and won't get Democratic votes, they don't have a serious plan", said Rep. Marc Pocan, D-Wis.

The middle-ground measure would mandate that families be kept together for as long as they are in the custody of the Homeland Security Department, whose agencies staff border facilities and enforce immigration laws.

"I'm very disappointed", said Representative Mike Coffman, a moderate Republican from a competitive Colorado district. "I have to have that", Trump said.

The interviewer had specifically asked whether Trump supported a conservative bill written by Representative Bob Goodlatte, Republican of Virginia, or "something more moderate", and asked whether he'd sign "either one". Ryan put down a rebellion in his own caucus and headed off a clean DACA authorization that nearly succeeded in coming to the floor via a discharge petition, promising to allow both groups to craft their own bills for floor votes.

But the entire episode revealed how often Republicans expect Trump to change his mind.

The new visa program, which is also available to other immigrants - including what lawmakers said is about 200,000 children who were brought to the US legally by their parents - is contingent on the $25 billion in border security funding being fully provided.

"WH official tells @PamelaBrownCNN that Trump "misunderstood" the question about immigration this morning and does indeed support the GOP compromise bill - despite saying on Fox he doesn't".

Don't fret, Republicans said, the president will surely clarify his remarks.

Democrats are expected to solidly oppose both Republican bills. He was commenting on the discharge petition/dreamers bill - not the new package.

"The children can be taken care of quickly, beautifully, and immediately". Attorney General Jeff Sessions had earlier cited the Bible in his defence of the border policy that has resulted in hundreds of children being separated from their parents.

"While the bill contains some positive provisions, including full funding for the border wall and closing loopholes in current law that sustain illegal border surges, it is still a mass amnesty", said RJ Hauman, of the conservative Federation for American Immigration Reform. The Dreamer' parents would be "rewarded for bringing their kids here illegally when the whole rationale" of the bill is to help those who are here illegally through no fault of their own, he said.

The main new element is a path to citizenship for as many as 1.8 million young people who have been living in the US illegally since childhood.
