  • Hundreds of residents spilled out on to the streets to watch in horror as the fire rampaged across the landmark institution

A huge fire is raging through the Glasgow School of Art with smoke billowing flames visible for more than 10 miles.

The Mackintosh building was badly damaged by fire in May 2014 and was due to re-open next year following a multi-million pound restoration project.

Around two hours into the incident, a spokesperson for the fire service told Sky News that the blaze is "well developed" and firefighters are "working hard" to extinguish it. SFRS reported no casualties and said all nearby buildings were evacuated.

Flames rise from the Glasgow School of Art's Mackintosh Building.

But much of that work has been wrecked, firefighters confirmed, after rushing to tackle the inferno which broke out at around 11:20 pm (2220 GMT) on Friday.

By the time fire crews were called to the scene the blaze had spread to the whole building.

Firefighters worked for three days to put out the Victoria's blaze, which forced the closure of several buildings and businesses in the Sauchiehall Street, Hope Street and Bath Street areas.

"The fire has had a good grip of this building and it's extensively damaged it", he said, while also acknowledging the city's "emotional attachment" to the site.

Devastated that a major fire has broken out at the Glasgow School of Art tonight.

Additionally, 50 firefighters in nine fire trucks arrived on the scene on Friday evening to fight the crippling blaze.

All nearby properties were evacuated.

The Mackintosh building was completed in 1909 based on designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Scotland's most-lauded designer, the BBC reported.

It was regarded as his masterpiece, and officials had spared no expense in the restoration that began after the 2014 fire.

"My first thoughts tonight are for the safety of people - but my heart also breaks for Glasgow's beloved School of Art", Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Twitter.

It seems the results of the fire are once again a crushing blow to Glasgow School of Art, who've worked hard to fix and recover from the 2014 blaze.

The UK government "stands ready to help, financially or otherwise", he added.
