President Donald Trump started Wednesday morning by touting his biggest accomplishment in diplomacy with North Korea and its leader Kim Jong Un: all but eliminating the threat of nuclear war.

By claiming that the North Korean nuclear threat has disappeared, Trump also risks weakening the USA negotiating position in talks on denuclearization that were mandated by the summit and will be led from the U.S. side by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The White House press corps had a couple of questions about President Donald Trump's comments that appeared to defend North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The talks, held in the border village of Panmunjom in the demilitarised zone (DMZ), followed on from an inter-Korean summit in April at which leaders of the two Koreas had agreed to defuse tensions and cease "all hostile acts".

Senator Chris Van Hollen, also a Democrat, said of Trump's tweet about North Korea no longer presenting a threat: "This is truly delusional".

Sen. Lindsey Graham does not have an issue with halting joint military exercises between the USA and South Korea while discussions with North Korea continue. The next joint military drill with South Korea, scheduled for this fall, would be Ulchi Freedom Guardian.

Two North Korean missiles flew over Japan a year ago as Pyongyang made rapid advances in its program to develop a missile capable of striking the USA mainland with a nuclear warhead.

He said Pyongyang was committed to giving up its nuclear programme.

'Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea.

"Regardless of the smiles in the summit many in Japan, South Korea and the U.S. Congress doubt that North Korea is honest in its intentions", the report states.

Pompeo is expected in Beijing later on Thursday to update Chinese officials on the Singapore summit.

Pompeo also said he's confident that USA talks with North Korea will resume "sometime in the next week".

Pompeo had told reporters on Wednesday that the North Korean nuclear disarmament could take two years to complete.

Pompeo also stressed that there will be no lifting of sanctions, or any kind of economic benefits given to North Korea, . before its complete denuclearization.

In the video, Trump shakes hands with other North Korean officials before getting to the officer.

However, Kono said the government was not considering such a meeting at the moment and that high-level exchanges must resolve the issue of Japanese abductees held by North Korea.

In the USA, supporters of President Trump welcomed the outcomes of the summit as a historic breakthrough. The United States maintains about 28,500 soldiers in South Korea, which remains in a technical state of war with the North after the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.
