Trump stuns Kim by asking photographers to make them both look 'thin'

  • US lawmakers react to summit

In less than a year, Trump and Kim Jong Un went from heated nuclear rhetoric that had the world on edge, to an historic summit where they were shaking hands to open a new healthy dialogue. Even before that, the Carter administration ignored North Korea's proposal for a summit.

But the future remains uncertain - the USA and North Korea did not reach any agreement on the details of how to achieve or verify that denuclearization.

North Korea could begin giving up its weapons today if it wanted to, but it instead has insisted on staging performances of denuclearization rather than on inviting worldwide inspectors to verify its progress.

Kim, who immigrated to the United States four years ago, said she was hopeful the unprecedented summit between the two leaders will lead to the denuclearisation of North Korea.

Tweeting from the presidential plane, which just landed in Hawaii to refuel on the trip back from Singapore, Trump wrote, "There is no limit to what NoKo can achieve when it gives up its nuclear weapons and embraces commerce & engagement w/ the world".

"Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea", Trump added.

USA presidents have made grudging deals with North Korea before, but none of them have ever showered the repressive country's tyrannical leaders with that sort of fulsome PR. "No longer - sleep well tonight!"

North and South Korea remain technically at war after the 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice that Seoul's then leader refused to sign and divided the peninsula along the demilitarised zone. No details of what those steps would be were given.

The article also states that Trump accepted Kim's invitation to visit Pyongyang, while Kim accepted an invitation from Trump to visit the US.

Trump said he believes that Kim will "immediately" begin dismantling his nuclear complexes when he arrives back in Pyongyang. The two sides promised to hold follow-up negotiations. In agreeing to the summit, Trump risked granting Kim his long-sought recognition on the world stage in hopes of ending the North's nuclear program.

Too much is also being made of the suspension of US military exercises -"War Games"- with South Korea. "We'll be verifying", the president remarked in a rare, extended news conference after the summit. Trump made no mention of this during his press briefing. "So we look nice and handsome and thin?"

On Monday, KCNA, Rodong Sinmun and state television used the same photographs of Mr Kim's arrival in Singapore and his meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana.

Kwang Yoon, a 59-year-old engineer, said the summit marked a "first step" toward a lasting peace. And though North Korea met the criteria expected of it to merit a removal from the state department's list of State sponsors of terrorism, it wasn't actually removed until 2008, the Independent article added. Otto did not die in vain. Despite claims and predictions, Trump has returned the U.S. to the leadership of the world.

A report in North Korea's Rodong Sinmun newspaper, another state-run outlet, claimed on Wednesday that the US agreed to offer rewards as North Korea moved toward ridding itself of nukes. "That said, I do have some concerns based on some things Donald Trump did and said yesterday and also based on the fact that he is Donald Trump".

"Today, we had a historic meeting and chose to leave the past behind", Kim said, speaking through a translator.
