He was censured by South Carolina's legislature but served out his term and won a special election to the House in 2013.

The swipe was a reference to Sanford's disappearance from the state in 2009, which he later explained was part of the extramarital affair he was carrying on with a woman in Argentina.

Polls will be open on June 12 from 7 a.m.to 7 p.m.

The South Carolina race for governor also features a Trump loyalist, Gov. Henry McMaster, who was unable to avoid a runoff. Nikki Haley as his U.N. Ambassador, allowing McMaster to ascend to the state's top job. She ran with the backing of Gov. Ralph S. Northam and local elected officials, and had the endorsement of The Washington Post, an influential voice in the well-educated affluent district in the D.C. suburbs.

"He is MIA and nothing but trouble", Trump tweeted. He faces strong challengers in Catherine Templeton and John Warren, among others.

With just under 100% of precincts reporting: Corey Stewart is the unofficial victor for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat.

As a candidate for governor in 2017, Stewart spoke out against removing Confederate monuments, including the Robert E. Lee statue that prompted a deadly protest in Charlottesville past year. Stewart edged out state Delegate Nick Freitas, who had the support of most establishment Republicans in the state.

On the Republican side, Taylor easily defeated primary challenger Mary Jones, a former chairwoman of the James City County Board of Supervisors. The commonwealth has gotten bluer, but the GOP has only moved further to the right there. The district has traditionally gone for Democrats and President Obama carried it twice but Poliquin won the seat in 2014 and President Trump won the seat comfortably in 2016.

Of the states reviewed, only Minnesota has enough Clinton-won Republican districts to flip a legislative chamber if they all went for Democrats in November. Mark Sanford lost to his primary challenger.

The group advocates a more ambitious strategy of targeting dozens of districts where Clinton was competitive in 2016 but fell short, or where Democrats previously did well.

Sanford becomes just the second sitting member of Congress to lose in a primary this year. A different candidate could be more competitive in this swing seat, given Tarkanian's losing track record and more conservative credentials.

No Republicans filed to run in District Three, which runs from south Richmond to Newport News, leaving Democratic Congressman Bobby Scott runs unopposed in November.

In the statewide race, Republicans will decide who they want to go head-to-head with current Democratic U.S. Senator Time Kaine in November.

Luria, a veteran, won the primary in Virginia's 2nd Congressional District, setting up a match with Republican Scott Taylor, and Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative, won her primary in Virginia's 7th Congressional District.

In the Democratic primary, Vangie Williams won a three-way race with almost 40 percent of the vote, defeating John Suddarth and Edwin Santana Jr.

The year of women continues. The victor will take on incumbent Republican Dave Brat in November.

In Nevada, the Senate race has emerged as a marquee midterm showdown.

Female candidates: By now, a trend is firmly established.

However, there is a real-world concern: when a jungle primary shuts out one party from a major race like for governor or senate, it tends to depress turnout among the excluded party's supporters in the general election, which can have a ripple effect down-ballot, even on races in which both parties have a standardbearer.

Florence attorney Marguerite Willis, who has said she was driven into the race by "the racist, sexist president of the United States", has argued that a woman is needed to take on the good-old-boy network and fight for better lives for women and the poor.

Voters in ME will be the first in the nation to use the system in a statewide election that lets voters rank candidates by preference rather than choosing just one. Mills is one of several Democrats running in the open contest, a key pickup opportunity for Democrats.

Businessman Brandon Brown and accountant Doris Lee Turner will meet in a runoff to determine the Democratic nominee for the 4th District.
