In seven years with the organization, Casey posted an overall record of 320-238.

Casey is the front-runner for the NBA's coach of the year award to be presented later this month.

The all-time winningest coach in Raptors history, Casey led Toronto to the franchise's first 50-win season in 2015-16, recorded 50-plus wins in each of the last three seasons and posted a franchise-record 59 wins and the top seed in the Eastern Conference in 2017-18.

The Pistons recently hired the former Nets general manager Ed Stefanski to lead their search for new front-office executives.

Casey has agreed to a five-year deal with the team.

He replaces Stan Van Gundy, who was sacked by the Pistons last month.

Dwane Casey coaches the Toronto Raptors against the Washington Wizards during the first round of the playoffs on April 17, 2018.

The Pistons hired the National Basketball Association coach of the year finalist Monday, hoping he can help the three-time National Basketball Association championship franchise regularly reach the postseason and eventually compete again for titles.

"Dwane is one of the most successful and highly respected coaches in our league", said Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a release.

He coached the Minnesota Timberwolves for a little more than one season, going 53-69.

Under Casey, the Raptors won four Atlantic Division titles and advanced to the playoffs in five consecutive seasons. Part of getting the Pistons back on track will be fixing their offence, which ranked 22nd in both field goal percentage and points per game last season.

Detroit will operate with an All-Star frontcourt of Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, but will have to figure out the pieces around them in hopes to take the team into playoff contention. During his junior season, the Wildcats amassed 30-2 record and captured the 1978 NCAA Championship.
