Merkel Says Trump Reneging on G-7 Statement Is ‘Depressing’

  • Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

In an attack on Canada's "very dishonest and weak" Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Mr Trump revealed he was tearing up the agreed communique from the G7 gathering in Charlevoix, Canada.

The move enraged Trump, who branded his Canadian counterpart "dishonest and weak" in a furious tweet, announcing the United States would pull out of an agreed communique.

Canada opposed U.S. President Donald Trump's suggestion to reinstate Russian Federation in the Group of Seven (G7), four years after it was expelled from the group for the Crimea issue.

Now, his chief economic advisor Larry Kudlow has waded in, saying Mr Trudeau was trying to make Mr Trump look weak before his summit with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Mexico hit back with fiscal penalties on USA exports like pork, steel, cheese and whiskey.

"First, Navarro, saying 'Justin Trudeau has a special place in hell reserved for him for attempting to diplomatically hoodwink this President, Donald J. Trump.' I have rarely heard such harsh back and forth between senior advisers, representatives of administrations, to another country's leader".

France is also standing by the G7 communique, a French presidency official said.

But Mr Trump had already said he would not hesitate to shut countries out of the U.S. market if they retaliate against his tariffs.

In other developments at the two-day summit, Trudeau told Trump there would be no North American Free Trade Agreement unless the USA dropped its tariffs on steel and aluminum.

"We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing, and that ends", Trump said in a press conference Saturday, prior to his decision to withdraw from the communique.

"How many times has President Trump said, if you hit me, I am going to hit you back?" "Divisive rhetoric and personal attacks from the United States administration are clearly unhelpful".

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we will also not be pushed around".

In a statement on Saturday, Trudeau spokesman Cameron Ahmad said the prime minister had said "nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President".

Macron said that the USA, which had pulled out of the Paris Accord and the Iran nuclear deal, and which has now imposed steep steel and aluminum tariffs on Europe, Canada, and Mexico, needs to be persuaded to remain in the "community of nations".

He called Canada's actions a "betrayal". "And then he goes out there and pulls this amateur political stunt...amateurish scheme that really broke up all the goodwill from that meeting in Quebec", Kudlow said.

Mr Maas said: "It's actually not a real surprise, we have seen this with the climate agreement or the Iran deal".
