Ford thanks people of Ontario for majority government

This activity supports tens of thousands of jobs in the province each year, makes an enormous contribution to the GDP, and has saved Ontario taxpayers billions.

Now, the Progressive Conservative Leader, who won a majority Thursday night, faces the monumental task of balancing the books, cutting taxes and not laying off anyone. "Immediately we'll be looking for an auditing firm to go in and look line-by-line ... we'll end up doing that as soon as possible". "I don't believe that this is part of the bandwagon or the trend that we're seeing in the United States, in Poland, in Hungary, in other countries in Europe".

Once the audit is complete, Ford said he planned to address numerous promises he made during the election campaign, including lowering taxes, cutting hydro rates, and eliminating the cap-and-trade system.

"My friends, together in 88 short days we achieved the impossible", Ford said.

Ford, who won the Ontario PC leadership with the help of anti-abortion groups and hardline social conservatives, pandered shamelessly to the religious right through various promises to place new restrictions on abortion access and attack the rights and freedoms of women.

Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner captured the party's first-ever seat in Ontario.

The NDP under Andrea Horwath will form the Official Opposition, marking a turnaround for a party consistently stuck in third place since Bob Rae's New Democratic government was defeated in 1995.

"Some of the deep clamour for change emerged simply from the fact that the Liberals had governed for 15 years - a lengthy stretch for any political party", said Cristine de Clercy, a political science professor at Western University in southern Ontario.

In pondering the lessons for the federal Liberals from the Ontario result, McKay said they need to ask "why would people embrace such a manifestly obvious unqualified candidate for premier; what is it that drives people to make those decisions that many of us would regard as nearly irrational?"

While Ford's family troubles did not dent his lead in the last week of the campaign, he can not afford to let these issues take centre stage once in government.

"They probably went into significant debt to run this election campaign so they have to find a way to pay that off".

The premier-designate said Friday that he planned to live up to his pledges, including to repeal the Liberals' updated sex-ed curriculum. "But I can tell you one thing, we're repealing it".

In my view, he needs to make a strong statement he means business about his promises by giving the top brass - the deputy ministers - at all of the province's 30 ministries their walking papers and put in a team he can trust, both within the ministries and in the Premier's office. Canada has countered with a plan to impose tariffs of its own on USA metals and other consumer goods.

"I wish her, Jane and their family well".

"I don't really see why the NDP would want to give anything to the Liberals now...memories are long in politics", Malloy said. The bar is now eight seats.

The resounding defeat of Ontario's Liberals in this week's provincial election saw the party that previously held a majority slip below the number of seats required for official party status in the legislature.
