  • Kwesi Nyantakyi- Ghana FA president

Fifa has banned the president of Ghana's Football Association (GFA) from football activities for 90 days.

The ban was imposed one day after the Ghanaian government dissolved the country's football association (GFA) after officials, including Mr Nyantakyi, were shown in a documentary allegedly taking kickbacks.

The investigative documentary titled "Number 12: 'When Greed and Corruption Become the Norm" exposes corruption in football administration in Ghana and other parts of Africa.

"I wish to clarify that at no time prior to or subsequent to any deliberations on the video did I consult, contact or inform any government official about discussions on the video". During this time, Mr Nyantakyi is banned from all football activities at both national and worldwide level (administrative, sports or any other). The ban comes into force immediately.

"I wish to apologise to my family, work colleagues, friends, associates and the people of Ghana for the disappointment my indiscretion has caused them".

Mr Nyantakyi was filmed in a hotel room appearing to take a $65,000 bribe from a supposed businessman seeking to sponsor the Ghanaian football league.

The information minister said the documentary "exposes gross malfunctioning of the Ghana Football Association characterised by widespread fraud, corruption and bribery".

Abdul-Hamid said the government was "shocked and outraged" at the claims, which included referees apparently accepting bribes of at least $100 to throw matches.

The statement added that the government will announce provisional measures to govern football until a new body is formed, and that it would inform FIFA and the Confederation of African Football of its decision.

Nyanyakyi's resignation means the Ghana Football Association are now without a president and a vice president after George Afriyie was sacked from his post a month ago.

Ghana, who have played at three previous World Cups, missed out on the this year's tournament which starts in Russian Federation on June 14.

Ghana's U-20 team also won a historic World Cup under his reign.
